Flash in v5

I didn’t see anything about Flash in the short list of new features slated for v5. Does anyone know if it will address not being able to view flash content in Freeway or if it will have any features to make creating Flash pages easier?

I am just learning flash now and want to use it more in my html pages.

Freeway relied on QuickTime to handle Flash. Apple stopped support for that with the update to 10.4.11 and upwards, in order to work around a security problem.

Whether Flash will be supported by QuickTime in the future only those in Cupertino know. Until then, there’s not a lot Softpress can do.

I should add that’s what I understand. I may be wrong.

I read in Softpress Knowledgebase,
“We hope to introduce an alternative method of previewing Flash in the future.”

I was hoping that “in the future” might mean v5. I guess not.

I wouldn’t have thought it would be tied to a major version release;
it is the sort of thing that needs to be made available as soon as
possible, once done.

BTW, you can lay money on Flash support not appearing in QuickTime
again. The security issues are too great these days.

Thanks for the posts Heather & Keith.

I guess I’ll see as the release gets closer. With as many websites going Flash these days, I would hope Freeway will make the integration as easy as possible, since ease is why I am using it.

OTOH, devices such as the iPhone and iPod touch do not support Flash, and may never. Remember the rest of us when you design sites that use Flash!

Personally, I now dislike sites that rely on Flash. It’s not called Flash for nothing, I find.

I prefer to think that the constraints of accessibility and compatibility for the designer to create better web sites. Leave Flash for when the “normal” methods don’t work.

I don’t think Flash-based sites are increasing in any particular way.
Flash has its place, but don’t forget that Flash content is not
exactly search engine-friendly!

Hi Joe & Heather,

Good points. I hear that Apple is working on adding flash to the iphone.

My clients that would look at this website are art directors sitting in front of their new Mac. And they are used to looking at sites with flashy creative eye candy. My static html site is a little boring compared to the competition where style is everything.

I have read about the search engine problem, so I thought I would keep individual html pages and just add some Flash elements to the pages for show.

Using Flash to add video playback to a site is popular right now. Flash based navigation is less so. Adding small bits of animated Flash content can be fun for web visitors, but never should be used for a whole page design. This is the worst thing you can do for search engine optimization. Flash should not be used to display important content. Similar to how graphic text is useless for search engines, so is Flash.

I think Flash for video content is excellent. It solves all the issues over which video format to use for the best compatibility across the platforms.

Because a forum I frequent insists on selling advertising space to support itself, and the companies who advertise try to out-do each other for annoying animation - even to taking over the site if you stray near their ad - I tend to surf with plug-ins turned off. It’s quite an eye-opener to find out how some sites are really broken if you prevent Flash from running!

Like Heather, I find Flash ideal for video/slideshow content, but
it’s surprising how much “animation” can be achieved without it, by
using simpler techniques creatively. While layer effects, slaves and
Actions such as Carousel will never be as slick as good Flash output,
they should never be dismissed, as they can still provide strong
visual impact.

Nevertheless, Flash inclusion is a necessary component that should be
incorporated in Freeway’s basic toolbox.
