Flash

I’m having trouble importing Flash files to update a site that I’m working on. I was looking to replace some QuickTime files, which work grand, but can be a bit slow to load on some machines that don’t have the best of Internet connections. When I import an .swf file all I get is a blank space were the video should be. I understand that due to a recent change in QuickTime, Freeway won’t now display the first frame of the file, but does this change stop flash files working altogether in Freeway?

Freeway should just upload the file and it should play fine from the server.

have you uploaded it yet and tried it ?

Right-click or control-click the space where you expect your Flash
swf file to appear. It is there, but it is showing just white,
possibly with a black line along the top and the left edges.

Should your test.swf file show something? Is it set to play? Does it
show anything different if you drop the swf file directly into a new
Safari window?

the .swf file palys fine in flash when I test it.

Does it play in Safari if you drop it into a new, empty browser window?

Ian, it doesn’t look as if your Flash element is loading. Try
inserting one on a new page and upload it somewhere to see if there is
something you’ve missed on the original page. Make sure it in an HTML
box, not a graphic box.

I am using Flash (.swf) files on sites made with FWPro4 and they are
fine. I have this week’s QuickTime (but will it last 10 days before
another security update?!) and I get a blank on the FW Page - with a
little icon and file name in the top left - but the Flash elements
run in the Preview and Browser Preview modes. I have found an issue
with FWPro5 in Preview (bug reported) where it still runs, but causes
half the page to be blanked out - but Browser Preview is still OK.

So if mine work, yours should, too.

Fortunately, Freeway will convert the box format on the fly. So if
you drew a graphic box and imported a Flash swf file, the box will be
turned into an HTML one for you.

As usual, Keith is way ahead of me, I see!

Sorry boys, but I must be missing something very very basic, cause it just isn’t working. This should be as simple as dropping in the .swf file that I have made and tested in my Adobe Flash programme into the html box on the page. I’m completey confused cause when I drop in the same clip as a quick time film it loads and plays fine. I have to be missing something when I’m encoding the video.

Colin, Thanks for the tip. Tried that and on a different server and it didn’t work. It is the .swf file that I load. Not the

Are you by any chance encoding this as an FLV with a SWF wrapper?
That’s a fairly common trick, but you can’t just drag the SWF into
the page and have it work – you will need to upload the FLV manually
into the same folder as the SWF (usually the Resources folder). If
that’s what you are doing here, you can try putting the FLV in an
HTML box on a scratch page that you don’t link to anything – that
will get Freeway to put the file in the right place.

waltd, Thanks that did it. When I encoded the clip in Flash the programme generated 4 other files as well as the .swf file. By copying them all into the resources file, the clip now plays.

Thank you everyone for your help.

Resources folder, right?

I’m glad you found the solution. But remember, doing things inside
the folder that Freeway uses when publishing your site is not
recommended, as a rule. Your fix will work locally, but you’ll also
need to upload those items yourself, to the equivalent location, when
putting your work online.

If you want to have things uploaded alongside your Freeway-managed
pages and content, the easiest way is to use the Extra Resources
action from the Softpress site
(http://www.softpress.com/kb/article.php?id=456) and have Freeway
manage it all for you, both locally and remotely.

(Many add-in actions will only work with Freeway Pro, but this action
is also available in a special form that Freeway Express 4 can use.)
