Form-AntiSpam

Hi Folks,

our clients have problems with spammails send with the formmailer in our websites.

I wanted to add an hidden textfield to that form that must be empty to send the mail. But i dont know how i can add that hidden textfield in Freeway. Anybody got an idea about that?

Rather than using a hidden text field why not use a Captcha so that users have to copy some text into a field before the form can be submitted.

Have a look at Mike B’s easiCaptcha ActionsForge - The Complete Repository of Freeway Actions

Because this Action costs Money and i dont like captcha, its one thing more to fill out and its ugly…

Would be sweet if i could solve it with hidden text fiels.

Okay, i managed the problem:

I made it hidden with the help of the “advanced” option for the textfield. Thanks anyways!

Hi Emka,

I am not sure the kind of spam you are receiving but to be honest if
it the kind I think it might be, a hidden field probably won’t stop
it. A captcha image or math question type (easiCaptcha has two both
types) help ‘and hopefully stop’ against ‘bots’ using your form but
many people actually now use forms manually to send crap to the form
recipient… which is what I think you might be the type of spam you
might be referring to. easiForm has various options to stop this kind
of spam, one is the badwords field, and the other is the html filter.
I have found from experience that people who use forms for this kind
of spam try to resort to other methods of input when they find they
cannot send a http:// link and so try to send the links using [url]
and [http], but simply typing [url,[http in the ‘Block badwords’
‘other…’ field then stops that type of problem. I have had no
problems with spam on any of the 15 odd forms that I use easiForm on
and I have these ‘easiForm’ forms all set to block html and have added
[url,[http to the badwords filter in the advanced mode, if something
new creeps up where they get clever enough to get around this then you
will probably find you can add some part of the message ‘like the
domain’ to the badwords filter.

To be honest the cost of easiForm is a very small price to pay for
helping to stop spam, but then it’s up to the person who has the site
or is building it to decide if they want to spend a lot of time trying
to stop it and probably not or spend a very small amount to ‘in my
case’ stamp it out.

Just to clarify, when I say ‘stamp it out’ I refer to spam that people try to send through forms on my various web sites, nothing on your web forms will stop spam send to your email address from people who have it.
If I could stamp spam out what is sent from people who use one of my email addresses than I would be a very happy bunny but then thats fairly much impossible to do without placing walls up and inconvieniencing your genuine contacts… sadly!

Hi there

I have had great success with the free FormMail and Captcha files from
Tectite at http://www.tectite.com/

This script can be customised in may different ways and allows files
to be uploaded and forms to be spread over several pages.

You can see it in action at a basic level here GordonLow.net | Contact

Best wishes

Hi Gordon,

I just used your form ‘with a invented email address and an http://
link’ for what could be considered spam, it doesn’t seem to stop that,
I can only guess that someone has not yet come across the form to use
it this way.

I do recommend people to try and test any of their forms as a means
for sending spam type emails and see if these are blocked, if they are
not then one day someone will find it and use it.

Many people cannot check against ‘bots’ using their form, that is
hopefully something that is blocked by a CAPTCHA or similar, but as I
mentioned some people now use forms manually to send spam, try sending
html addresses and using [url] and [http] in your form, these are not
the only things that are used to send spam, but it is these ones I
found I had to block against with easiForm, if you can do this with
the form processing script you have then I would advise doing that
unless you need people to send emails with http:// in them.

I noticed you also use an option to click to open your email address
in an email program, one of the main reasons of using a form on a web
site is to try and avoid having to doing this, I really would would
advise against it. I know it is not impossible to stop someone getting
an email address as they would simply need to send a message in your
form to get it in most cases, but the people who crawl the internet
looking for forms can very simply just click that link and have your
email to add to an email database for spamming, at least you can make
the decision if an email contact from a web form is likely to be
legitimate before answering… all this helps cut down on getting spam.
