Not in the Apple DVD application, all you get is a blank (or maybe
ucky green) rectangle. You could use Handbrake to rip the movie to
MPEG, and then export a frame out of QuickTime Pro Player. It’s a bit
of a slog because you have to convert the entire film to get one frame.

Thanks Walt. I can rip using DVD Clone for example to make a backup. Would that be any use? Can iMovie do anything with that?

You can pause the movie, take a screen shot (Command-shift-3 from the Finder) and crop to the movie…

Thanks Steve. I was trying to get something with a better res, but it’s worth a try. Thanks.

I’m not sure that works in an actual DVD. Try it, I’d love to be
wrong. My understanding of how it works is that the window manager
composites that rectangle last, and skips it during a screen shot.

I think you can do screen grabs from VLC: http://www.videolan.org/vlc.
Or there’s SnapzProX: http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/snapzprox.
And there’s this:

Very helpful Roger, thank you, although the method described in the third link doesn’t produce the desired effect in the current version DVD player. But I was hoping to actually grab a single frame or two from the Video TS folder. But useful info thanks again.
