FreeCounter2

FreeCounter moved to a new server a couple of months ago, and there have been some shaky moments in that transition. The latest of these seems to have been that all hits were being recorded as coming from a single IP address. I just made a change which might have fixed this, but I’m not 100% certain of its truth. If you use FreeCounter, please do have a look and see if your results just changed to reflect this update. If you don’t use this aspect of the service, then please of course ignore.

If you are really deeply into your web stats, then I recommend that you pursue another service – maybe GetClicky or Google Analytics – as they have much more detail. On balance, they also use cookies and JavaScript to do their business, so they can’t be as stealthy as my system. Their approach is ubiquitous these days, so apparently that’s not as big a deal as it was in the late 90s when I originally wrote this. I am not sunsetting this project, but it definitely is not getting as much of my attention as it once did.

Thanks,

Walter

Hello Walter,

I am not getting to the page at all, just white space. Also, a few weeks ago I was getting RSS to NetNewsWire.

If your settings have changed and your continuing this service, would you please post them here.

Thanks for your time,

Frank H.

P.S. I also used the link from the action forge FreeCounter 2 Page with the same results as my old links.

Thanks for the report. Please have a look now, I found and fixed that particular issue. See if the IP address is reported accurately at the top of the page, and then visit your hits and see if the correct IP addresses are being reported there. (You may need to wait a little while for the newest hits to arrive, the site was basically dead most of the afternoon – since my initial message today until just this moment.)

Thank you Walter, this reminds me it’s about time to donate to the energy bill on your page, which:

http://freewaypro.com/counter2/

Comes up fine, and my sites seem to have been receiving hits at least since 19:00 PST today (22nd).
NetNews is connecting great.

Thanks again
