I also date back to when all programs were documented on those mini-hardbacked notebooks and frankly didn’t really miss it when documentation started to become absent from packages.
But for me, I prefer a physical manual for complicated apps that require many steps and procedures to complete certain tasks, especially web-design apps. It’s not a question about learning to do it a ‘new’ way by using PDFs. I and many here have been using PDFs for documentation since they were invented.
Sometimes, it’s nice just to sit back in a quiet place with a book in hand without staring into a block of lit, 2 dimensional pixels to learn how to do something.
Again, for me, $40-$50US is my magic price for a bound well-written resource guide, whether it’s the official Soft-Press one, or a commercially written FREEWAY IN 24 HOURS kind of reference or tutorial book.
