Freeway 5 - tables

Does anyone know whether Freeway 5 solves the terrible table issues that plague Freeway 3?

Virtually impossible to build decent tables in FW3…

Expand what you mean - I don’t think there are very many of us that still run V3.

Table vell alignment…or rather the correct alignment of objects/text in table cells.

You can set text to center, and the table cell to align middel…carry on working in other cells, maybe poip an image in, maybe copy and paste that image into another cell…nothing rocketship…and the next minute all your table cell content is ‘off center’…off to the left, up from center…whatever.

An issue I never resolved, but just decided to live with, was where I was putting markup items into cells. The markup item contained code for shooping cart ‘buy’ buttons. This code called an image, the buy button image. The image appeared ok, but could never be centred either vertically or horizontally, no matter whether you tried to do this via the Freeway inspector tools or whether you hand coded some ‘centreing’ into the markup code. It just wouldn’t have it!

I have never had a set of table cells behave as it should do, they’ve all been extremely dodgy! It’s the Achilles Heel of FW3 in my opinion - I just wondered if tables behave themselves properly now?

I think Softpress knew they had problems with table cells but moved on to 4 and 5 without ever resolving the issue fully in 3.

That’s fine, but if I’m going to upgrade it’s got to be wateright that table cells now behave themselves!! I use them a lot.

Why not download the trial of FW5 and see for yourself.

You know what they say ‘The proof of the pudding…’

But bear in mind that putting markup items into cells isn’t ‘regular’ behaviour. Certainly it is straightforward when aligning graphic and text content but markup by its nature can be problematic.

Well yes, you;'d think it would be straightforward aligning graphics and text content, but believe me it isn’t! As for markup in cells, well I see no reason why it shouldn’t work…it’s just like adding a markup item somewhere else, isn’t it? It’s all tables at the end of the day.

I did download the trial…didn’t get into much in the allotted time, it expired, and now I can’t run the trial again!

Things have come a long way since 3 and I think there are not many 3 users left for obvious reasons.

And at $99 to upgrade…

There might be more than you think. At least I still use it, and it
does everything I need perfectly. Definitely one of my favorite apps.

I’m not quite sure what the obvious reasons are, Dave?..!! As I say, it has it’s Achilles Heel, but few things are perfect.

But do 4 and 5 also have their Achilles Heel?..I’m sure they do, and is poor table management one of them, still?

I think I should leave comments about ‘poor table management’ of which I have no complaints - to those from SP Towers.

There is no software that progresses through 2 major revisions that does not supply significant improvements in Form and Functionality (unless made by MS of course) and still sells in significant numbers and increases market penetration year on year.

If you like FW3 then why would you not upgrade - unless financial considerations prevail of course.

Improvements in speed and time not spent in associated/external programs are enough (for me at least) to justify any upgrade costs! And if done regularly is relatively painless.

My 2c worth.

Hi Hugh,

I think I remember seeing your table alignment issues in support; didn’t they turn out to be custom styles you were adding to the page? If you are using the same custom styles then these would not only affect the table cells in Freeway 4 or 5 but also Dreamweaver, Coda or any tool used to create your site.

We have had no other reports in supportland, or on this list, about table cell alignment so I think Dave is bang on the money with suggesting you try out the trial to see if your problem still occurs.

Hope this helps,

Joe

I totally agree with Dave - and the longer you leave your upgrade the
more likely you will have some problems with legacy site files.

At the moment (from my experience) the only any real problem you may
get is with styles not transferring correctly from FW3 files to FW4 &
FW5, but as FW progresses can we really expect Softpress to maintain
such good compatibility, as new and better techniques are incorporated
and more functions added? The upgrade cost should be recouped in a
couple of jobs.

And, so far, I have had no problems with FW5 tables and use them
specifically for alignment on forms, etc. because they hold together
well across all platforms.

Hi Colin, you make some good points there, and I’m glad to see tables hold up for your uses - encouraging.

Joe, you could be right about the custom styles, but there were other issues long before that particular turkey showed up. However, the current problem (with markup) refers to text-less, style-less cells in which I am simply putting some unstyled markup…it literally is just a small action to send details to a shopping cart, and it includes an tag to call the ‘buy’ button. But danged if the button can be made to center any which way!
Hence why I was asking whether a form action could be applied to a graphic in this thread…http://freewaytalk.net/thread/view/60924
