Freeway Database Integration

A while back, Softpress had an Action for integrating Freeway with a Filemaker database (though the Action’s name escapes me now).

From what I understood, Filemaker totally revamped the inner workings of their product, making it incompatible with the Action – which ceased being developed. Supposedly, it was a very easy thing to develop and maintain.

Has anything since come up as a database solution for Freeway that maintains that simplicity of management?

The Action from Softpress was called “DataDesigner.” Their website states:

"Currently DataDesigner is completely dependant on CDML which is used by Filemaker 6.

We are looking at developing an XML/XLST version in the future to work with Filemaker 7."

A tutorial and Action that only works with Filemaker 6 is available at this link:

This is great news. Thanks for your work in developing this action. Vic

There is nothing currently available to do this. As far as I know,
there is no current activity on resuscitating DD, the changes wrought
by Filemaker are deep and wide. Where CDML “looked” a lot like HTML,
and could be integrated into Freeway pretty simply (I say that as
someone who has written Actions, not someone who worked on that Action
suite), the XSLT model used by FMP 7 and up is a completely foreign
beast.

In any case, having a FMP database for your Web site starkly limits
your choices of hosting providers, and in a classic example of
economic theory, raises your monthly costs ten-fold or more.

Walt,
Does this mean that I am eventually going to have to break down and learn about SQL?

Are you familiar with the online database Dabble DB?

It appears that it may be very easy to integrate with any website. However, I have not given it a good enough look yet.
Thanks,
Vic

Yup. We’ll get you your stick-on gray beard to go with.

Funny enough, I stumbled across a tutorial that included Dabble last
night, looking for something else. I haven’t tried it out, but it
looks cool.

Be slightly cautious of systems like this – always weigh the cost to
you of having to re-create all of your data if (when?) they go out of
business, or the cost of other people being able to get at your data.
When you don’t control the data, someone else does. For some projects,
it’s a natural fit and genuinely worth the price. For other projects,
you couldn’t pay ME enough to use it.
