Just following up to say what I said to Dave off-list, I’m not aware of any process that runs on cron or similar that could be responsible. The server in question is the same physical machine that hosts the Softpress.com site, so you might want to compare those two when (or if) it slows down again.
The only cron event that happens on the FreewayTalk server side of things is the indexer for the Sphinx search engine, but that runs every 15 minutes every day.

I have noticed it at its worst in the am (GMT) - improving through the day…
Can’t get onto FreewayTalk her in Surrey, nothing to do with Virgin Media. Safari says “contacting” but that’s as far as it goes. Actually, just as I write this the page has popped up, about 5 minutes after trying to connect.
I’ve also noticed that I tried to reply to something via email this morning, it never appeared on the list, so I went and did it on the website, and the original email popped into my inbox via the list 3 1/2 hours later.

Nope - very painfully slow here in Essex, UK. Takes minutes to load a page, not seconds. Virgin Media too, if that’s helpful.
It’s running really slowly here for some requests, too. Either the server is under attack (DDOS) or there’s something else going wrong. And just now, it started working again really quickly. Very strange.

ActionsForge is hosted in Joyent’s San Diego data center, on a dedicated 1GB Accelerator VPS. Which in turn costs me a certain amount of money each month, but also hosts a lot of other sites. All of which to remind you that the window is closing on ActionsForge Next, and you should pledge now (and often): http://actionsforge.com/next
Thanks,

as does ActionsForge (not sure if that’s on the same server Walter).
I’ve sent a support request to Softpress to look at the mail queue. That may be related.

I saw it on the train from PHL to NYC this morning, got so bad I saw a 504 error. I have been in touch with Softpress, who “own” the server, and we’re trying to track down the culprit. No answers yet, but please be patient.
I just wanted to let you know that we’re still looking into this issue. As soon as we find the cause we’ll get things back up to speed.
Thanks for your patience,

This couldn’t have come at a worse time for me, either. I have the flu, and a fever, and I’ve spent the last 24 hours plastered to my bed with a large bottle of Advil nearby.
I just disabled the little counter numbers in the navigation bar, since that’s probably the most resource-intensive thing in the whole application. I’m still not clear that the problem is the Mailist application itself, there are a number of other applications running on this server, and the issue could be an interaction between them.
