FW5Pro beta 3

With new FW5p3 I can’t open any file, new or previously recordered with FW4pro or FW5p2. Is it a bug or my problem? With previous preview all were ok for me.
Thanks

And the same here… 2 x Beta 2 and 1 x FP4 sites opened seamlessly.

Well done Softpress.

I haven’t had this problem, but I have to ask why is it not possible for Freeway 4 to open projects done on Freeway 5? I really don’t like that.

Freeway 3 couldn’t open Freeway 4 projects. Much the same way that
QuarkXPress 4 can’t open later versions, nor can InDesign.

It’s the price of progress, I guess.

OK up to a point, but I imagine Photoshop 6 can open a tif file produced in CS 3. I understand that not all features might be available but it should still be able to the sites and carry out normal work.

Files like .tif, .jpg are industry standard files that are not part of
the coding that saves a working file in an application. You can open
all the images from your Freeway Resources in the Site Folder,
including the html, in much the same way. (However, as you know,
opening an html file only gives the basics needed for a browser - not
your original working model).

Only the Softpress crew can tell you why the changes in the engine
room make a difference in the way a FW file is saved in each version.
It’s the same for new versions of most applications, although some
allow you to ‘save as’ in an earlier version, which is not the same as
a native file able to be read by an “older model”. If Softpress could
do that, you would get a partially disabled file without the new
tricks, so the only advantage is when you have someone on FW 4, or
FW3, etc, need to work on your file. Not really useful to most of us,
seeing how little it costs to upgrade.

OK, I take your point, but I think it would be a worthwhile addition if it were possible to save as an earlier version where possible. With Quark you would do this for widespread compatibility if handing a file to somebody who doesn’t have a recent version but perhaps that’s not so relevant with something like Freeway.

Unfortunately, in my experience, both Quark and Adobe don’t want you
to be able to save back to earlier versions reliably.

The path from Quark 7 to Quark 6 is quite rocky, and strewn with
incompatibilities because v7 includes extra stuff that would break in
the earlier version. Fine, if your document is simple, without
relying on fancy graphic effects, but if you’ve used a Quark 7 drop
shadow effect it’s not going to work in v6.

The same applies to InDesign. You can go up the ladder, but it’s hard
to go back down as Adobe take some of the rungs below you away as you
climb.

I’d better stop now. I’m getting all carried away with metaphors and
similes!

Not so relevant now, but as the FW community grows it may be worth a
thought. Say about FW6?

Not really, and in no small part because Softpress doesn’t charge
anywhere near as much as Quark has asked for upgrades!

:frowning: although i did ask softpress and did buy pro 5, i still don’t have an answer why my files dont open on a core solo! don’t like the idea i bought an ( in my eyes ) major update for my program that i can’t use on my first mac!

does anybody else have this problem to?? it leaves me in a difficoult situation, because my cs3, is not for my core duo, so for now and the next week ( and perhaps months ) i will leave fw 5 for what it is, in the box, feel sorry for myself until i find out what is wrong, and what will happen.
It would be nice to know that i was not the only one???

As you can imagine, with just over a week to go before final release
for Freeway 5, it’s all hands on deck over at Softpress Towers.

I’ve not seen other reports of problems running FW5 on a variety of
supported Macs. Have you contacted Support directly with your
problems? The address is support [at] softpress [dot] com.

Please drop them an email so your problem can be investigated.

Hi Heather,

yes i did in febr. and again beginning of march, but i also this morning received an email from softpress!
so i will be looking for a friendly file to sent!
thanks for thinking with me!!!

and when i sent a message in febr. and beginning of march i would think with a problem like this i don’t think its not asking to much or unreasonable to be nerveous just like you say right now!
I did buy the ‘5’ version already end feb. , so i want to be sure i don’t buy a programe i can’t use for the next few months.
And yes, NOW its only a week away, it was not when i sent my questions. i sent my first email, with beta version 2! i thought perhaps beta 3 would change my problem. but it did not.

sorry iff i sound like i defand myself but i did wait more than a month for an answer for this problem! and than your comment did not sound fair to my little ears :-)sob sob LOL.

No problem. With any beta program, it’s important to try to find and
squash as many bugs as possible. The public beta of Freeway 5 was an
important part of that, as well as the internal testing of the software.

With the amount of work that’s been going on behind the scenes, as it
were, it’s sometimes possible for an email to go missing or be
overlooked. I’m not saying that is what happened in your case, and
I’m glad that you might be on the way to finding out what is causing
your problem.

I hope it works out for you.

Cheers

Heather

I solved the problem disabling the language that I was running (italiano), according to SP suggestions. Evidently the problem affected the localization.
Many thanks to Simon Manning for his help.
