G5 and Airport

I have a last-gen (Late 2005) PowerMac G5 dualie. I was thinking about
buying an Airport base station and a card to toss in the G5 but I’ve
been reading that installing a card is not a DIY process for this
model and has to be done by Apple. Seems odd. Anyone have experience
with this model G5/Airport? I would prefer not to pay Apple to do it
if I don’t have to.

They say that about the Intel Pros also but I did it anyway. I also installed a bluetooth card. The reason they don’t want you to mess with it is partly because the boards are TINY and could easily get fried. As long as you are EXTRA careful it should be ok. I bought the parts online so no argument from the vendor, but they came with minimal install info (such as where they were to go). A little Googling turned up a service manual that helped. I would assume the G5 is similar.
