GoDaddy

Earlier today I emailed an small software company with a feature request. This was their response:

We won’t be adding a specific ‘GoDaddy’ template, I won’t even start on how bad a host they are and how immoral their business is, but in the future we will allow fully customisable templates, for now we’d probably recommend a ‘Server’ template using ‘Notes’ for the extra details.

I’m not going to divulge the software company because this was a private email. The reason I’m sharing it with the group is I know many of you are not fond of GoDaddy. This made me realize that I must be out of the loop on this company as far as their service and business ethics.

I know GoDaddy’s advertising is a bit controversial, but I’m curious as to the other reasons you folks don’t like GoDaddy.

BTW, I’ve personally never had an issue with GoDaddy or their service (save the downtime caused by the hacking that took place late last year), and their personnel have always been very helpful. I just want to know what I’m missing.

Most of the problems the people on this list seem to have is with getting their forms to work, apparently GD handles things differently in that regard. Beyond that I can’t say what other issues FW users might have.

Personally I’ve never used them for my own stuff but I have had clients who did and for me I find the control panel convoluted but that may simply be because I rarely use it. I’m rather indifferent.

Yeah, now that you mention their Control Panel does suck.

It took me 5 minutes today to locate the dialog box needed to change a simple account password for one of my clients.

I moved all my services away from GD about 3 years ago. Way too convoluted and so annoying with all their extra ‘sales’ features that get in the way of what you want to achieve. And I agree about trying to find stuff.

I’m sure they’re fine for some people, but my overall experience wasn’t good so I moved. I also found transferring domains out was a pain too.

I’ve been paid large sums to fix implementations of the simplest of things on GD. Basically, they tweak their PHP to make it harder for “script kiddies” or spammers to host attacks from their server. But the way that they go about this breaks everything normal and honest. Oh, and to pile on about their control panel, it’s the UI equivalent of the grocery store checkout aisle, filled with candy and screaming toddlers. Anything you need to do is buried under fourteen layers of redirect.

Yeah, I really need to move everything from GoDaddy, but I’m locked in for at least a few years with the contracts I signed. :frowning:

I have used GD forever - just for domain registration. There is not another
product or service I would ever purchase from them as they are clearly,
offensively, snake-oil and shysters for everything they pile on top of that
core service.

Recently I lost an important (to me) domain because I could not afford to
renew the registration in time. GoDaddy - as part of their normal business
practice - purchased this expired domain for themselves and now want to
ransom it back to me for ten times the original fee.

That’s just nasty Ernie, very unprofessional.

That is my biggest gripe with GD and the fact that they will never apologize for screwing up.

Namecheap is my registrar of choice. I use a few different hosts for hosting.

I just find their control panel maddening. I had to do a DNS change and it seemed like it was a 10 click - three pop up window process…with a hard “up sell” all along the way.

Like Ernie I use GD for Domain Registration - NOTHING ELSE!

That is one thing that they can do correctly BUT you have to be very thick skinned and totally ignore the incessant barrage of self promoting/hard sell emails and constant upselling checkout practices.

There is no good reason to host with them - you can get a cheaper/easier experience at any number of other hosting providers.

David - have you tried www.ukreg.com (fashosts)? They’re pretty good and cheap for domains.

No I haven’t but I am not unhappy having my Domain management at GD. It is certainly very easy to set Nameservers etc. with their system.

I do note that Fasthosts are doing .coms at a very reasonable £5.99 - interesting.
