Going further with WebYep

I’m a big fan of WebYep and Max’s WebYep actions; this combination
has made it very easy to create user-updatable sites and hand over
responsibility for content management to the site’s actual users.

The thing is, I know there’s more that can be done with WebYep than
I’m doing. Tricks such as dynamic navigation, user-driven page
creation, that sort of goodness - but I don’t know how to do it. And
as the new academic year has just begun here at the university I
won’t have time for in-depth experimenting for a fair while. Right
now I don’t even have much time spare for digging for tutorials, so I
hope y’all don’t mind me asking…

Are there any tutorials on WebYep in Freeway, in particular on taking
things further than basic editable text/image/file elements and
looping structures?

Hi Keith,

I don’t think there are any definitive full tutorials of all the
features and tricks. Some other things I’ve found I stumbled upon on
the Obdev forum or had a ha ha moment.

Not sure if you know, there is a way of generating a large site from
very few pages using the WebYep menu by setting the image links on the
menu page to a third Freeway page that is them populated many times by
all the webYep menu links data.

Look at this site ackroyd dent .co.uk (please piece together the
text to create the hyperlink - sorry don’t want google to permanently
link direct from this site)

The pictures on each property listings page, are linked to a single
Freeway page that is fully populated. The potential is to easily make
a shopping site using this method with very few Freeway pages. The
webyeb menu can be made to publish on any other Freeway page giving
the appearance of main navigation.

Thanks Max - I’m picking up this thread again…

What I’d love to know is a method for being able to create new pages
in a site through Webyep rather than through building them in
hard-wired form in Freeway. Basically, I’d like to be able to produce
a template page in Freeway and let a colleague log into the site and
create new pages from that, each with different info and images. And
of course it would need to populate some list of links in some manner
to help people navigate to it.

Is this something that can be achieved with Webyep? It feels like
something a step up from how I’ve been using it so far.

Hi keith
yes it can in-fact you can (using the beta webyep system) now add multiple admins, and restrict those areas and page generation to those people.

if you have some sort of idea in your minds eye of how you would ideally like to see this page generation to work then I could come up with a quick rough to see if it works the way you want it to.

On a different note I constructed a real quick rough action for autopano giga (I have a big job using this software) and I couldn’t remember if you used that particular method of creating your panoramas? anyway if you did and you want it let me know and I will email it to you.

and on a second note oddly enough another max (my nephew) started University this year just like your son… I remember when the name was rare… :o) now there seems to be a whole crop of young max’s… :o)
ps2 I liked your max’s video with the beer bottles…

Hi Max/David,

This subject hugely interests me. Like Keith I have a site that needs some pages working as templates whereby the client adds words (in this case: courses & programmes) and images and a new page is generated as a result.

I am guessing this utilises the WebYep loop feature, but I am not sure how to go about doing it. Daves site (ackroyd dent) seems to achieve the kind of thing I need.

As an aside… Max if you have any info/pearls of wisdom re utilising WebYep with Mootools, RomanCart or Mulitple Menus etc I’d be really interested to hear what you know.

Many many thanks
Jon

Hi Jon

Most of this is generated via a webyep menu but rather than me trying to explain how to do it… it may be just quicker to send me an idea of what it looks like then I can construct an example based on that.
One day I will get around to writing all these things down but I have been trying to finish the new manual for months now and I haven’t even managed to do that yet!!
So yes just send over some sort of idea and I will get something back to you
you can find my mail address on my website
as far as all the other examples I will try to find all of the ones I mentioned and post them on my site.

Hi Max
Two and a half years on - did you ever write any Freeway specific tutorials?

Hi Kevin
yes I did but its mostly in the latest version of the action (3.2) which is not yet released. It includes examples on how to use webyep with mals-e actions and face-book like buttons plus a better tutorial on how to style the gallery. There are also eamples on how to use webyep with page titles and meta tags.
I do have others but they are more experiments like webyep working with ticker

Yes indeed, I would pay good money for some more in depth, definitive tutorials covering a fuller usage of WebYep. Anybody…?

I think David’s site Ackroyd Dent is cracking example of skills I would like to learn.

By the way David, judging by your gravatar you look just like Jason Statham only friendlier.

Kryten.

Max, that’s great news. It’s one of the reason’s why I haven’t gone more in depth with WebYep because I didn’t know how to implement things properly, and when I found threads (or whatever) on how to do them, the language used was above my head. So a tutorial in basic language would be my ideal.

I’m a simple man at heart (and in my head).

Exactly Trevor, I regularly feel that I can’t keep up with this web development malarky :frowning:
