Google Analytics questions

(1) The Google Analytics action indicates that the Site Code should be
in the format UA-######-#. However, Google tells me that my Account
ID has the format UA-#######. Are the Site Code and the Account ID
the same thing, and which format is correct?

(2) Can I apply this GA Action to the main site folder in the Freeway
sidebar? I seem to have done so, and the “dots” have appeared beside
every page on the site indicating that they need to be republished,
but the Actions palette doesn’t show the GA action when viewing
individual pages. Have I succeeded in applying the Action to every
page on the site, AND is this what I should be doing?

(3) Why doesn’t the Google Analytics action show up in the Insert >
Action Item menu or under the toolbar Insert Action button? The only
place I can find it is in the list that appears when I click the ‘+’
button in the Actions palette.

Thanks,
Steve.

Here should be some help:

  1. Google as two forms of the code input which is “Legacy” and “New Tracking Code.” You can input either or into Freeway, but if you choose to use the legacy code you’ll have to tick the box for Legacy. When you setup your tracking code it should give you an individual ID for that specific site. So if you add more sites under one account each one will have it’s own ID.

  2. You can apply the action as a “Folder” action by selecting the folder for your published pages (not the master, because if you save it’ll corrupt your document) and then goto “Page > Folder Actions” and apply the Google Analytics and that will apply it to all pages.

  3. The GA action is a page only action, you can’t put it on items in Freeway…however there was a post a while back about someone wanting to track PDF’s and by adding a little javascript to your links you can track specific items.

Hopefully that helps.

Thanks Dan. I follow all that, but my problem here is the difference
between what the Freeway action says should be the ID format, and what
Google indicates in the info on the Analytics website; that is, UA-
######-# on the one hand and UA-####### on the other (only one
hyphen in the latter). Which format should I enter into the Freeway
Action?

Yes; this is what I seem to have done. I had two questions: (1) Is
this the correct way to apply the Google Analytics, and (2) is it
normal that, although the action has been applied to all pages by
applying it to the Site Folder, it appears in the Actions palette ONLY
for the Site Folder – not for individual pages.

OK; I guess I see the logic here, though I would have expected the
Action to appear in a menu of Actions if only the page is selected.

Cheers,
Steve.

I just tried this out in the Action and it won’t accept a UA-#######
number. Go to the Page>HTML Markup menu option, select “Before </
BODY>” from the pulldown at the bottom of the dialog and paste all the
code that Google gave you. I’ll get a bug logged on the problem you’re
having right away.

Sorry for the inconvenience, I guess the number of Analytics users has
grown so considerably that they have added extra ID’s.

You can do it either way. Using a folder Action applies it to every
page in your site. If you only have some pages you want to apply the
Action to you need to use the Page version.

There are a number of Action menus. They are, folder level, page
level, item level and standalone level. The + icon in the Action
palette is the only contextual menu, that is if you have the page
selected you will see a list of page Actions.

Thanks Joe. I’ve discovered that something has changed, or at least I
can now enter the required ID format UA-#######-# (seven digits before
the hyphen and one after) in the GA Action even though the note on the
Action panel indicates there should be only six before the hyphen.
I’ve checked the HTML of the uploaded pages and the ID is shown
correctly. Could it have been the Freeway 5.2.1 update? If so, thanks
for the quick work!!

Cheers,
Steve.

Glad you got it working, I could say yep, that was us, we fixed it,
but I think it could always be added like that. The code in the Action
just looks for UA, then a hyphen, then any number of numerics, then
another hyphen and any number of numerics so the first one you were
trying (only one hyphen) was failing.

If anyone has an ID with only one hyphen/dash let us know.

Cheers,

Joe
