Google search question...

I recently did a web site for a client. I added the site to google directory listing, and it showed up on page 6 searching for the name after a couple weeks. I made some changes to the site main page, and now it has disappeared from the search, that produced the site earlier? Did this happen from making a change to the site? Or does Google only keep the listings there for a short time, and keeps re-listing new stuff? Hmmm… I added the meta information, put in alternate text for everything, I know this is a complex subject, but the site did show up pretty quickly… then disappeared?

google listings through their search engines is not really based on wether or not you add a site to the google directory listing, at least not in my experiences.

I have never added any sites i have made to the google directory listing, and my searches through google come up easily close to the top, unless the name of the site/business is a very commonly used one. Even a commonly used business name’s search showed up on page 2 through a google search.

What i did in freeway that has made a difference in search engines:

on any page (for this example, a “news” page)

  • click on the inspector (on the page tab, in the title field)
  • instead of just giving it a name “News”, type in the name of the website & “news”.

It would look something like this:

myfavoritewebsite.com - news

This simple step has helped me alot.

Also, when i changed this info so that i could get better search results, the change happend rather quickly. So i dont think google re-lists anything. It just depends on how good you design the site (for web search optimization) i guess.

Thanks… I’ve been making changes gradually to see if anything helps, I’ll try these. I checked with the google stats, and registered the site with the stats page… haven’t checked back lately to see what’s up though.
