I know! that one has the interwebs all ablaze today.
As a gmail user, I have some idea what they are doing and have some
opinions about it. But hey, they don’t have to be such dicks about it –
that will turn loyal but troubled users like me into lifelong enemies.
Business rule #1 - don’t make enemies of your customers.
But I suppose that begs the question who their customers actually are. Some
will say not me – I am the product, not the customer. I am the cow, milked
again and again until I have nothing valuable left to offer, then led off
to final processing into lunch.
Hey!!!

That should be a t-shirt.
When I created my Goo account I really felt like I sold my soul to The Unholy One itself. I’m not surprised by this but then again #%$! 'em. I closed my account.
Dicks. Yeah, that about sums it up.

I’d love to close mine, but I’m using Google Apps to power my email accounts with domains I own. I used to route the email through my own server, but found it to be too undependable. So my question is: what are the alternatives out there?

Google’s services have such deep integration and market penetration I just don’t know if there’s anything else that can compete at a comparable level.

“Just as a sender of a letter to a business colleague cannot be surprised that the recipient’s assistant opens the letter…”
Really!!! So thats a basis for defence? Well thats fine then. I’ll start opening my neighbours post when it arrives then…

Ironically, I saw a tweet from Matt Gemmell yesterday recommending these folks as a substitute for Gmail. I say ironically because he was complaining about the pending loss of IMAP access to his mail, not the lawyers and their oily excuses:
Not free, but hey, $5/year for a single address?
My DNS provider offers mail as part of their DNSPro service, so I’m paying $20/year for the mail service and a bundle of other DNS-related upgrades. That’s another one to consider:

I have a Gmail account that I use mainly while testing applications I’m building, but I never keep any mail in the in-box there, and I never give it out as a way to contact me. The whole “scanning your mail to better serve you — with ADS” bit just creeped me out from the very start. Free is not free.

Recently moved a client over from Gmail to Rackspace Email - http://www.rackspace.com/email-hosting/webmail/
$2 per month per account and Rackspace does not read your email.
They have to comply with request (warrants) to hand over data to law enforcement agencies - I would imagine that is standard practice with most end user agreements though.
Cheers

The FastMail UI is quite nice, very clean. Just signed-up for the 2 month free trial.

I’m trying out the Zoho Mail right now, and am quite pleased. Free (for one domain), quite powerful, with a fairly polished UI. Works well with Airmail Beta, too.
