Graphic Child Item Erratic

I am bring in a photograph via the “Import From iPhoto” file menu option. Select “Scale And Trim” to fit the the graphic box and create a child graphic item for some graphic text to go over it. Apply graphic style that I created in the style editor to the child item text. The parent is selected “Combine With Children”, the child is selected “Combine Graphics”.

When I go to move the child item by dragging it an outline appears about 100 or so pixels to the upper left of it. Upon releasing it, lets say I was trying to move it to the right, it pops over to the left and up about 20 pixels. The only way I can move it is to use the arrow keys and then it seems to only move in micro steps.

Can anyone help, not sure what is going on here?

As you have described the text has become a child of the picture and so will remain within its bounds but difficult to move.

If you want more control then don’t draw your graphic text box over the picture box (creating child) - draw it to the side first and then position it over the picture.

You can then select the two items and group them and you will still be able to move the text box easily within the picture box area. You can also elect to combine the graphics.

BTW I am staying at a friend’s house in Indian Wells just a few miles from your office this summer.

So any recommendations for places to eat etc close by would be appreciated.

Hi Dave,

Wow, so this really is a small world. By the way, my name is Dave as well, we uses Team SDA as we are active on several forums for different software we use. I make most of the post for Freeway at this time as its just me building our new site. If you have gone to our current site the address is our mailing and small shipments. Our studio is located near by at my residence. You can go to our home page bottom right corner and click on a “closer look” and see our old studio layout, made some changes last summer to accommodate more work stations. As for places to eat, that depends on you taste. Would be happy to make some recommendations.

01 - So is the graphic text child item is reacting to the source image size and conflicting with the graphic box that is containing the image? I have noticed when I copy the graphic text box child item and past it to another part of the page it is huge. Just curious what is happening here?

02 - Thank you for the combining and grouping suggestion. Perhaps I am missing something really basic here, but when I group items I am not able to move the furthest back item or move the group with the mouse. If I select the group in the site panel to the left I can only nudge using the arrow keys. Any help?

Thank You, Team SDA_Dave

PS: Noticed you are from Scotland, have a little Scottish blood myself “Sutherland”.

Not sure about what is happening to your sizes when you copy/paste

02

Moving grouped items can be a real pain but there is a trick to it… and if you read this thread http://freewaytalk.net/thread/view/11473#m_11474 you will get it no problem.

Just to summarise though

Click on the site pane title. It will change to show the page and items, as well as their nested/grouped status.

Locate your items, and in turn click on each of the parts in the group, and then switch “Lock” in the inspector palette ON. This will lock the coordinates of the items, so you can’t move them.

Do not lock the group itself. Now, you should be able to move the group around using by clicking and dragging anywhere within that group of elements.

Interestingly I noticed it was Sutherland Design as my Mother-in-law is a Sutherland. From what part of Scotland do your Sutherlands come?

Thanks David,

This was helpful.

We came to the states many generations ago. I am from Southern California. Funny though, I am told that our clan is not all that popular, guess we did something very horrific 100’s of years ago. Not sure as to where we actually come from in Scotland.
