Putting the titles in a flex container, and then tweaking the way the flex items are distributed, is a pretty simple solution, and is also pretty foolproof. Unless the graphic becomes distorted (and it shouldn’t, unless you define its width and height separately), the titles should remain aligned at different sizes.
There’s no problem about adding links to titles that are within the individual flex items. You can’t apply a link to a flex item, but you can apply it to text and other content that is within a flex item.

not as complicated as I thought - and my first use of a flex box!
So I did as you excellently suggested, creating a flex box that has 5 “title” boxes within it. after some finagling with the Margin/Alignment values, I came up with the below. I’ll next add links.
My question now: how can I raise the entire flex box, so the titles are closer vertically to the main graphic (with the instruments)? none of the values I play with seem to have any effect.
Select the “Gary Golio” graphic and press right-arrow to select the paragraph it is nested in. Set the bottom margin of the paragraph to zero. This should remove most of the space beneath the graphic. You could also set the graphic’s vertical alignment to bottom (Margins and Alignment section of the Box Inspector).
Select each title (I’m assuming these are text rather than graphics) and use the Paragraph Inspector to set their top margin to zero (or something more than zero if you don’t want to remove all the space).
Put this in a footer section on a master page (see above for suggested use of header/main/footer on a master page)
If you use a graphic, centre-align it by selecting the containing paragraph (select the graphic, then right-arrow) and choosing centre alignment. If you use a container box, centre-align it by choosing Center from the Align popup in the Margins and Alignment section of the Box Inspector.
Link the graphic or box or text inside a box to the Home page
I haven’t suggested using navigation menus, because I think you want a more quirky style, but these provide an easy way to create navigation links that will work on different devices.
One thought: instead of putting a home button at the bottom of the master page, you could provide a row of links to each page (books, news, for kids, art, gary). Put this in a footer on your master page, and users will be able to navigate to each page without having to go back to the home page each time.
Try to ensure that everything fits and works on narrow screens (down to 320px).
long story, but I worked it out.
for some reason, instead of putting the HOME button graphic in a separate Footer box, I placed it at the bottom of my main body container, and this allows me to link it.
There’s no reason you can’t put the link in a footer section, and it’s much better to put it there (so it’s shown for all pages) than to put it in the main section (which should be different for all pages).
For any content that you want to be shown for all pages, put them in a header or footer section on a master page, and make sure that the Use Master Content checkbox remains turned on for the instance pages.
JEREMY–
Once again, my sincere thanks for all your patient help. FWIW: Since you were writing to me by email, I didn’t understand (until just now) that our correspondence was being posted on the Forum, as well.
Had I understood that, I might not have posted an image of my home page (+ name), etc. (Not that I said anything weird, but still.)
Other folks may not understand that, as well, so something to consider.
The Softpress Talk (Discourse) forums work are essentially online forums which also send out emails to people who choose to receive emails. Our older forum (Freeway Talk) worked in a similar way. I’ve actually been replying online, and I think some of your posts have been online rather than via email, but Discourse sends out my replies as emails.
You can message me directly if you need to send confidential information, and if there’s anything in your previous posts that you’d like to hide, you can edit those posts to remove that information.
So I uploaded my new website to the server, and the Home page looks great - only problem is that I can’t see beyond it because all the titles, when clicked upon, simply open up a new Home page window, and don’t take me to their link-designated pages (Books, News, etc.). I’ve checked the Format-window links on each, and they look correct to me. Have I erred?
Your help would be much appreciated, as I imagine this is a simple fix.
thanks,
G
*do I need to designate an item no. in the Item slot? this is to go from the Home page to the Books page.
If you’d like to contact me privately, you can click on my picture next to a message and then click on Message.
I don’t think there’s anything in your post that needs to be private though. It’s fine to ask beginner-type questions here, and the answers might be helpful to other users.
I think the only thing you need to do (probably) is to remove “BOOKS” from the Target field. There is a set of possible targets, the most common of which is _blank: this causes the link to open a new window, and can also be set by selecting the Open in New Window or Tab checkbox.
I think that browsers are interpreting target="BOOKS" to mean the same as target="_blank"
do I need to designate an item no. in the Item slot? this is to go from the Home page to the Books page.
No. You only specify an Item (Box) if you want to go to a particular box on a page.
OK, the other thing you need to do (looking at your screenshot) is to choose the page you are linking to from the Page popup. To go to BOOKS, choose the BOOKS page from this popup.
Xway’s link dialog is very similar to Freeway’s, so most of this is the same for both programs. The Item popup is new though.
So I took out “BOOKS” from the Target field, and chose BOOKS from the Page field.
I re-uploaded the site to my server, but the problem still exists.
thoughts?

the url shows a “/#” after the address. does that tell us something?
It’s a link to the current page.
I think the easiest way to resolve some of these issues would be if you send me a copy of your Xway document (via some kind of file transfer service such as Dropbox).
You can email a file transfer link to support at softpress dot com, or you can message it to me in Discourse (click on the photo next to this message, then click on Message).
[If you want to reduce the document size before sending it, you can choose Empty Site Folder from the File menu. Xway will recreate the contents of the document’s Site folder next time you publish or upload. You should also compress the document before sending it (select it and choose Compress from the File menu in the Finder).]
