How many of you require a deposit before you begin work? Up to this point, I’ve been billing clients at the end of the project with no upfront deposit required. So far, this hasn’t been a problem, save a few slow pay customers.

However, I have an IT friend who is starting to land me a few clients. Most of the initial meetings take place via teleconference, primarily because his clients are two hours away. Although I don’t have an issue with not requiring a deposit from somebody I can actually meet face-to-face, these teleconference established relationships concern me a little.

Many of these long-distance clients have issues with their former website developer. However, in this case I am familiar with the website company involved, through my IT friend. Apparently they do have issues with delivering on promises made, not following instructions, and overcharging for what I consider to be fairly basic work, like website maintenance. Quite frankly, this is the owner’s 6th business venture, after 5 failed efforts, all in a variety of different service industries.
