grid inaccuracy- what am I doing wrong?

Hi forum.

If I set (in page set-up) a canvas of 6cm x 6cm, and a grid setting of
12 (hoz) and 12 (vert), with divisions of 2 set for both up and down,
why does the resulting grid still not quite fit on the canvas? Is this
a bug??

Tom

In Layout>Set Grid, change the Horizontal and Vertical Dimensions to 12mm.
Tick the box ‘Use Grid Settings in New Documents’.

The new grid dimensions will apply to the next new document.
If the document has margins, make them 0.6cm in the Custom Page Sizes box.

Whilst investigating the above I discovered some new (to me) tricks:

In the Layout menu, tick Snap to Grid.

Choose the oblong or oval tool, position the cursor inside a square in the 12mm grid and drag. Intaglio draws a square or circle within the 12mm square grid.

Horizontal and vertical lines are also snapped to the grid—horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.

Polygons are centred horizontally or vertically. They’re not confined within a single square in the grid, however.

Hi Ian.

I got this back from Nick, after I PM’d him;

The grid is set to 12 of what units? The default is whatever is set
as the units in the measurements dialog (defaults to points). 12
points is 0.423 cm, which explains why it doesn’t go evenly into 6 cm.

Nick

Seems simple enough- I’ve been using “snap to guides” for too long.
It’s made me lazy.

It’s about changing from points to millimetres (under measurements),
and it worked

I’ve been using all your tips for years btw- but thanks for letting me
know anyway

Hello Tom,
Glad to be of help. There seems to be another problem.

When I drew a 12mm line with the Dimension tool, 12 appeared above the line, so everything seemed to be OK. Unfortunately, when I checked the test file this morning, 12 had changed to 34.016. This could be pixels, but as the screengrab (linked below) shows, the dimensions and grid are set to millimetres.

Any ideas?

Hi Ian, sorry for the long wait- I’ve been on holiday.

Yes- this kind of stuff gets me every time. Sort of Intaglio voodoo.
Nick’s given me some good pointers to why and how, but I can’t help
getting
the feeling Intaglio needs to be completely re-written from the ground
up again
(which is unlikely)

FWIW, I still prefer Intaglio to Illustrator!

Hi
I have not found a replacement that comes close to Canvas X for Macintosh. ACD is not upgrading to the new Mac hardware. I installed it on a iMac Intel 3.05 GHZ on Leopard OS and it ran well seemed to be as fast as my G4 Dual 1.25 GHZ. Apple seems to have fixed so older apps will work.
