Grid Snap

Just want to check something…

When grid snap is on and I create an object, the handles snap to the grid as expected – and likewise when I move the handles on a pre-existing object.

But when I move an existing object that is not on the grid it does not snap to the grid. Instead, it moves by multiples of the grid amount. (So if you happen to have an object that is off-grid, you cannot get it to snap on-grid.)

So I was wondering whether there was a keyboard modifier or similar to make an existing object snap to grid rather than move by the grid amount. (I haven’t spotted anything about it in the documentation.)

Stewart.

The issue here is that you may have aligned some portion of the object to the grid and want that to remain aligned as you move the object.

Use the command Object > Align To Grid to force an object to align to the grid. Note that this aligns the origin of the object as specified by the origin control in the geometry inspector (use the disclosure triangle in the bottom right corner of the panel to reveal this control).

Ah – thanks for pointing that out!

I thought it must be somewhere but failed to spot it in the menu.

In my defence, I did look through the User Guide but didn’t find any mention of it.

(Bet you’ll now say that it is described on page X of the User Guide and I can feel bad about not spotting that either.)

Come to think of it, I might have seen it in the menu (hard to miss when you go to Help and search on “grid” and there’s a big moving arrow pointing to it!) but possibly I thought “Align To Grid” was a toggle much like “Snap To Grid” and I intended to look into it further at some time… and then didn’t.

Anyway, thanks for your help,

Stewart.
