Hard disk keeps losing the thread

Hi there

For some reason when I verify my startup disk I regularly get the messages

“Missing thread record (id = xxxxxxx) Incorrect number of thread records”

“Invalid volume directory count”

“Missing directory record (id = xxxxxxx”

By starting from another disk I am able to repair these problems and I’ve never been aware of problems when using the startup disk in question.

However these issues seem to recur on a daily basis so I’m guessing some application or something I’m doing could be causing this. I keep hourly backups (Time Machine) and daily backups (SuperDuper).

I would really like to find out what the possible cause of this is. I’m running MacOS 10.6.2 and have run the combo update again but this didn’t make any difference.

Thanks

Gordon

What do you repair it with? I recommend DiskWarrior. If you are using Disk First Aid/Disk Utility, it may not be up to the challenge.

If you are or do use DiskWarrior and the problems recur, contact Alsoft. Their tech support is really good about issues like this, knowing where they come from, and what to do about it.

Thanks, Joe.

I had been sticking with the ‘safe’ solution of just using Apple’s Disk Utility. However I do have copies of Drive Genius 2.3.0 and TechTool Pro 5.0.7.

I’ve rebuilt the volume using Drive Genius and I’ll let you know how it goes over the next few days.

Thanks again

Hi Walter

Thanks for the link which was very informative.

The upshot is I scanned the disk and Drive Genius 2 reported bad blocks which is something I believe a SATA drive shouldn’t report unless its automatic record of bad blocks has been exceeded. I must admit I rarely do this because of the time involved in scanning.

I’ve now backed everything up twice and Apple are sending a replacement Hitachi hard disk next week. Only downside is they claim they’ll charge me £224 for it if they can’t find anything wrong with the disk I return!

Many thanks

Gordon
