help with quirky rollover issue

ok, first I’m working in version 4 Pro.

I’ve created rollovers that work beautifully, until I put a background behind them and then NOTHING!

Is there a way to fix this or am I doomed?

Your response is greatly appreciated.

Are you working with layered items?

You also have to make sure that the background is/isn’t part of the rollover

You can include it and set it not to be affected by the rollover or you can make it part of it

I find it easier to set the action inspector to images so I can see which items are ticked and in which state. (Ticked meaning that it will be visible)

nothing is layered - I tried that and ended up removing since it didn’t work either…I created all of the roll overs - then I tested them all, they all worked, and then when I put the background which is really just a Freeway item filled with color behind them, they ceased to work.

I just tried importing a graphic with the color in it to see if that works but it still did the same thing.

Background isn’t part of rollover!

help, I’m starting to throw things!

Which method are u using for your rollovers.

2 graphic items for mouse over and normal on top of each other grouped and then action applied? - or the other method which I dont do!

Yep. That’s because with the rollover items set as layers, you have
to group the items before they can work as a rollover set.

What this also does is lift the items up (in a sense) so that they
don’t combine with the graphic that is slipped underneath in
'DesignFish’s layout.

What is happening in that case is simple…

The rollover items are not layered, because without knowing about
grouping them, it doesn’t appear possible to make them act together
as a rollover.

When another graphic is placed behind those rollover item graphics it
is output as a big ‘combine graphics’ thing; it becomes a part of the
composite graphic rollover collection. And because you can only have
one rollover set per graphic, the result is that only one of the sets
of rollovers can function - or perhaps the combination ends up making
something which doesn’t function visibly at all!

The answer, DesignFish, is to either:

a) Uncheck the Combine Graphics checkbox from your top rollover item,
so that it can be generated as its own sliced-out graphic element
from the big graphic you’re asking it to generate (first remove the
Rollover action, then do this, then reapply it), or

b) Select the items in a rollover set, group them, then make sure the
Layer checkbox for the group, the new object that contains the set
of items for that rollover, is set to be a layer.

I think this is where you have to UNcheck the box in the general
settings of the info panel that says “combine graphics.” It’s
combining your graphics into one image, so the rollover isn’t working
(I think).

Thank you Thank you Thank you all!!!

I tried this option first:

b) Select the items in a rollover set, group them, then make sure the Layer checkbox for the group, the new object that contains the set of items for that rollover, is set to be a layer.

…and it worked like a charm…I’ll try the others as well but was feeling pretty impatient. Will upload a link when project is complete…

Again, Thank you Thank you Thank you…aka MANY THANKS! I’ll be back here for I’m sure the next question is just days away!
