Hey, I've got a new Mac ... and it's screamingly fast

Well actually only part of it is new …

I’ve just put an SSD from Crucial into my MacBook Pro.
I’d previously replaced the original HDD [AFICR from 500Gb] with a Seagate
Hybrid drive [750Gb] I saw a modest improvement over the original, but not
really worth the extra cost, although I also increased the capacity.

Black Friday saw Crucial offering the 960GB SSD for £375 that makes it 39p a
GB.

I took the opportunity to do a clean install of Mavericks, then updated the
system and migrated everything across, documents and apps, them moved the
SSD from the “toaster” and put the drive internally in the Mac that is.

I have not done any scientific timing tests, but I will say where the boot
to my working state, regular apps loaded, usually from cold took 3-5
minutes, I’ve got some big apps loaded by default. Now its now ready in
under a minute.

Of course everything I have to do on the MBP now is done much more quickly,
loading and closing other apps in double-quick time. No pauses waiting for
for instance menus to come up, Finder window filling with documents and
PhotoShop dialog boxes to appear!, which I was happening all-too often. The
original Mac came with 4Gb I took it in early 2011 to 8Gb, maybe it would be
worth taking it further to 16GB but I’m not convinced the difference it
would make compared with difference the SSD made.

Not bad, cheaper than buying a new Mac plus an extra 210GB storage.

Best wishes Peter

I replaced my MBP HDD with an SSD a few months ago and I’m loving it. Boots up and logs in WAY faster, almost instantly. It’s silly how fast it is. I also get no more “disk too slow” messages from apps like Garageband.

Joe,

I just wish I’d done it before.

But continuing to be really pleased …
