How Do I Create an "E-mail a Friend" Button?

Hello.

Does anyone know how to create an “E-mail this article to a friend” button? I have a site that’s going to have a lot of articles on it and I’d like to add that feature.

Thanks.

The easiest way to do this is to use a mailto: link, but this is also the most fragile way. By fragile, I mean that you leave most of the implementation in the hands of your visitor, since all that does is open and optionally compose an e-mail message. Your visitor has to have his or her e-mail client set up properly, must realize that the message has to be sent, has to send it, etc. It means also that you have no idea who the message has been sent to or if it even happened.

If you want help composing a mailto link, you can try my mailto maker here:

Now if you want to solve this more neatly, you will have to get into some server-side programming. But then you will have the benefit of being able to store all the addresses that are entered, go back through them later, screen out obvious attempts at automatic spamming, etc.

If you want to dive down that rabbit hole, let me know and I’ll post some library code from one of the projects I’ve worked on.

You might also take a look on HotScripts or another script library and (I suspect) find that this problem has been solved hundreds or thousands of different ways.

Thanks, Walter. I came across the MailTo option on your site today by coincidence.

I think I’m going to use that for now. I’ve got so much going on with the site (we launch April 1st), that I’m going to stick with your simple option for now.

Thanks for all your help. I’m going to install your carousel action someday, too.

Essentially this is just a slight variation on the plain vanilla
mailto link Walter has already suggested and is very low-tech but you
can add text to the message body and automatically include a link to
the articles page, if not the article itself. Put the code in a
markup item and place it where you want or attach it to an image.

Here’s an example page: <http://anoptic.com/demo/tell_a_friend/
index.html>

The code: http://pastie.caboo.se/166107 Be sure to edit the subject
and message variables.

Ignore my previous post, it’s irrelevant. I missed the below link in Walter’s reply.

Never mind.

All of this was a help, actually. In the end, I used Todd’s version 'cause it worked better with what I was doing. But I appreciate both of you guys helping me out.

Thanks,
Jamie

Hey, Todd. As mentioned, this all worked out well.

Quick question – do you know how to change the typeface in the code that you provided? It’s currently in Times and I’d like to switch it to Helvetica if possible.

Is that easy to do? I’ve tried a few different things and it doesn’t seem to work.

Thanks,
Jamie

Make sure you first have one space before and after the markup item (important) then simply highlight the item with spaces and apply a style. You could also target the markup item by name instead but try the first method.
