might be a dumb question…
how can i make the settings in freeway so my page is 100% in width, and stretches full screen?

If you want a background image to fill the page, make it as a
web-ready graphic (optimised JPEG or GIF) and add it using the
Inspector palette. Play with the horizontal and vertical alignment
controls to see how you can change the behaviour in the page.

If the page alignment is set to ‘center’ then your layout will remain
centered in the browser window, with your page background filling it
up according to its scale and your chosen alignment or tiling
settings.

If the page alignment is set to ‘none’ then you can set the size of
layered items to be relative to the left and right of the page rather
than their default of relative to the left and a fixed pixel width.
These items will flex to keep their sides the same distance from the
sides.
Use the Dimensions pane in the Inspector palette; click the different
buttons next to the measurement fields to change the item’s scaling
and placement behaviour. Try giving an item a fixed width but having
it placed relative to the right rather than the left.
Also try giving an item a percentage width rather than an absolute
pixel width value.
Remember that this stuff only works when the page alignment is set to
None. Any other value will assign an overall page width. Because the
‘page container’ will then not change in width, the items will never
be required to flex or move.

Any use?

ok,
thanks… i’ll give that a try.
I was just thinking ideally, starting off with a template that would stretch full screen, and just a color background.
You gave me an idea though.

Hi can I jump in on this - I am struggling to follow your explanation Keith (this is down to my ignorance rather than your instructions). I added a bg using ‘inspector’ but there was then not a dimensions pane so I added the bg as an image (dragged it in) I made it in PS (saved as a gif) the same dimensions as my page. I now have a dimensions pane and have made the 4 alignment boxes all 0px and the 2 width and height boxes 100 % - this is, obviously, incorrect 'cause when I try a preview the bg is still the same size as the page - I’d like it to stretch to fit the browser window. I’ve tried changing a few more settings but am getting more and more confused. (the page is set to ‘align - none’ any advice very welcome. Roger

Ahhh… no, the bit I wrote about the Dimensions pane was only meant
to help you control the scaling and placement of the various items
you have on your page - NOT the page background graphic.

so I added the bg as an image (dragged it in)

This will give you a graphic - but not a page background graphic. A
page background is like a watermark image, something preprinted on
the page, that doesn’t work at all like your normal HTML and
graphic elements.

Delete the ‘fake background’ graphic that’s now in a box, then add it
as a regular page background, then preview the page in your browser.
Do that first, before trying anything with your various boxes on the
page.

Next, try using the Inspector’s controls to adjust the horizontal and
vertical alignment and tiling options for this background image.
Preview in a browser and resize the window each time you make a
change so that you really grasp how the changes affect things.

Then, once you have this down pat, start experimenting with
individual objects on your page, changing the Dimensions settings for
one, previewing in a browser and resizing the window, and then
changing the object dimensions settings again, previewing, etc.

the page is set to ‘align - none’

Perfect: this is essential for getting objects to stretch and/or move
with the browser window width. BUT it is not important at all for
getting the background image working.

You may want to try simply setting the page background image to
Horizontal: Center, and then the page alignment to center as well.
Then your layout WON’T flex… but it will sit centered in the
window, neat and tidy.

Shout out if this hasn’t helped!

Jeez you’re good Keith - I’ll get trying with that advice as soon as I’ve cleared out the garage (first fine day for a while) this is one of the advantages of being ‘freelance’ - flexitime - though, of course, my wife takes advantage as well so garage clearance is now top of the to-do list. Good of you to spend so much of your time helping out newbies like me. Regards Roger

Garage clearance is always near the top of my wife’s ‘Keith-to-do’
list. But somehow it never quite reaches the same level on my own
mental to-do list!

Helping people with different Freeway questions helps me keep on top
of using it myself, not to mention helping fine-tune how I
communicate this sort of stuff. So there’s a selfish element in there
too.
