I thought there was some way to do various styles of gradients in a graphic box – such as having an area in the middle that is than the sides, etc.
I have searched through the entire reference guide and do not see anything.

If you are using Pro then there is an action called Fill Master that will do this for you.
Select your graphic box and add the action to it - Item>Actions>Fill Master and then set your parameters in the Fill Master Action Pane
