IE6 No More

I’ve grown weary of supporting IE6 and IE7 on my Japanese sites. I found the following site today that offers some free code in the Japanese language that will put a banner atop my pages:

Here is the code in question:

  <!--[if lt IE 7]>  <div style='border: 1px solid #F7941D; background: #FEEFDA; text-align: center; clear: both; height: 75px; position: relative;'>    <div style='position: absolute; right: 3px; top: 3px; font-family: courier new; font-weight: bold;'><a href='#' onclick='javascript:this.parentNode.parentNode.style.display='none'; return false;'><img src='http://www.ie6nomore.com/files/theme/ie6nomore-cornerx.jpg' style='border: none;' alt='Close this notice'/></a></div>    <div style='width: 640px; margin: 0 auto; text-align: left; padding: 0; overflow: hidden; color: black;'>      <div style='width: 75px; float: left;'><img src='http://www.ie6nomore.com/files/theme/ie6nomore-warning.jpg' alt='Warning!'/></div>      <div style='width: 275px; float: left; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;'>        <div style='font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; margin-top: 12px;'>あなたは旧式ブラウザをご利用中です</div>        <div style='font-size: 12px; margin-top: 6px; line-height: 12px;'>このウェブサイトを快適に閲覧するにはブラウザをアップグレードしてください。</div>      </div>      <div style='width: 75px; float: left;'><a href='http://www.mozilla.jp' target='_blank'><img src='http://www.ie6nomore.com/files/theme/ie6nomore-firefox.jpg' style='border: none;' alt='Get Firefox 3.5'/></a></div>      <div style='width: 75px; float: left;'><a href='http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=341c2ad5-8c3d-4347-8c03-08cdecd8852b&DisplayLang=ja' target='_blank'><img src='http://www.ie6nomore.com/files/theme/ie6nomore-ie8.jpg' style='border: none;' alt='Get Internet Explorer 8'/></a></div>      <div style='width: 73px; float: left;'><a href='http://www.apple.com/jp/safari/download/' target='_blank'><img src='http://www.ie6nomore.com/files/theme/ie6nomore-safari.jpg' style='border: none;' alt='Get Safari 4'/></a></div>      <div style='float: left;'><a href='http://www.google.com/chrome?hl=ja' target='_blank'><img src='http://www.ie6nomore.com/files/theme/ie6nomore-chrome.jpg' style='border: none;' alt='Get Google Chrome'/></a></div>    </div>  </div>  <![endif]-->

I copied and pasted that code into Page Markup in Freeway, in the “Before ” section. Unfortunately, there are two problems:

  1. The close box doesn’t work. No matter how often I click it, that banner won’t close.

  2. Although it recognizes IE6 (Japanese) just fine, it refuses to display in IE7 (Japanese).

Can someone examine the code and explain to me how to solve these two problems?

Thank you,

James Wages

Hi James,
That first bit of code is an IE conditional comment;

Thank you for the helpful advice, Tim! The addition of that little “e” fixed the problem in IE7. It now displays in both IE6 & IE7.

However, the close box still doesn’t work. Would you know how to fix that part of the code?

Thank you,

James W.

Hi James,
The single quotes n the code are causing it to end early. Have a search for this code;

<a href='#' onclick='javascript:this.parentNode.parentNode.style.display='none'; return false;'>

and replace it with the code below.

<a href='#' onclick='javascript:this.parentNode.parentNode.style.display="none"; return false;'>

Specifically the single to double quotes around the word none is the thing to change.

This Action may be of interest to you as well;
