iMac PMU repair

Can anyone recommend any Mac repairers ideally in the North of England?

One of our office iMac’s (G5 iSight 2.1ghz 20") went pop last night. I suspect the PMU (power management unit)

Possibly a DIY job but I think you need special tools to split the case.

Has anyone been here before? And split an iMac case?

Hi David,

I have a friend who runs an Apple Authorised Service Provider and Reseller in Doncaster. I had a similar problem with my iMac G5 2GHz 20" (no iSight) and sent it to him and he replaced the power supply (which, for me, was under Apple Extended warranty due to a known problem with certain iMac models).

The company is NDTec (http://www.ndtec.co.uk). If this is close enough for you, you should get in touch, see if they can help. It was not a problem for me, just couriered the iMac to them and they sent it back within a couple of days, running like brand new.

Have opened up the case as per instructions from NDTec to try a few things to determine what the problem was. That was quite easy. But replacing the part required an authorised repair centre to do the work under warranty.

Hope that helps,

Craig

Hi Craig

Thanks - I gave them a call and seem very reasonable and knowledgeable after talking to the engineer who would be fixing it. - they even call out. They have got the job

It does sound like the PMU unit is an issue with iMacs.
