Hi Andy,
Check the Finder preferences; Finder > Preferences > General > Show these items on the desktop
It could be that you have external disks deselected.

Tim.

Finder Preferences has an option for what you want to show on the Desktop, hard disks among them. Could it be that?

Thanks for all the responses on this.

As far as my iMac is concerned, my Iomega external drive is recognised as long as I plug in the double USB leads. My old G5, and even my old Macbook running on the battery will recognise it from a single lead - so I can only assume the iMac ports are drastically underpowered! Pretty shabby for a desktop computer.

Such is progress

Just use a powered USB Hub. Look for one that says OK for iPhone or high voltage items. McAlly has several

I suppose I’ll have to! But really I shouldn’t have to buy a powered USB hub…if my G5 and, god help us, a battery powered Macbook can power it through a single port!!

agreed but with a hub you can have several drives attached all at once. I use the 7 port Tri Hub and love it

That’s true also, except that I don’t, on the whole, have or want to connect several drives at once!

Each drive is different, and each Mac is different, in terms of how much power they need and give. The spec may say one thing, and the device may vary from that spec. I have a FireWire drive that will only work when it is plugged into the back of my Mac Pro, not the front. It also works great on my MacBook Pro. It is one of those tiny drives that uses a laptop mechanism and doesn’t have any power supply other than FireWire.

Agreed, Walter. It’s all a bit of a lottery, isn’t it

Actually just in case anybody has this issue still…here’s a little updated response.

Yes…it is a power thing. And yes…you need to plug in BOTH ends of the 2 headed usb cord.

My external fired up real quick and was finally recognized by the PowerBook G4.

Have a good one!
You’re Welcome!
