I have found something, but it was not easy : on my imacG5 the text
inspector is in the panel \>fenêtre\>remplissage\>texte ; on my ibookG4
it is in \>fenêtre\>règle de texte ; why the difference ? how can I
change it ? under \>remplissage it is not logic !

I had certainly inadvertently moved the panel ; now I have dragged it
in the right place ; it’s OK

OSX enables special characters (including Exponents) to be entered in several different ways.

The characters in a font can be seen and accessed from the Character Palette (Edit menu).

Open the Character palette and double-click the character. Alternatively, drag the character into the document.

Alternatively, use Unicode. Hold down the Option key and type ‘00B2’. The standard 2 is replaced by the Superscript two character (also known as a ‘Superior’).

Some fonts contain a features menu from which special characters can be accessed. Open the Font Panel (Command-T), click the ‘gear’ icon and choose ‘Typography’ from the menu that appears. The menu lists the font features for the current font. If a ‘Vertical Position’ feature displays, click the ‘Superiors’ button.

Hello Ian,

The unicode super and subscripts does’nt exist in each font, nor for
each digit and letter, so I had to use the modification of the
baseline and of the size, for what the scripts are very convenient.
But I don’t find how to enter the unicodes : you wrote :

It does’nt work or I don’t understand how to make this

Unicode method:

1. Select the Keyboards icon. It’s in the main Finder menu bar, to the right of the Day/Date.
2. Select Unicode Hex Input.
3. Change the font to Lucida Grande.
4. Type e=mc.
5. Press the Option (Alt) key and type 00B2.

Nothing happens until you type the 2. e=mc then appears, followed by 2 Superior.

Most fonts have 3 Superior numerals—1, 2 and 3. In the font they’re called Superiors, but the Character Palette calls them ‘Superscript’.

To find out if a font has the 3 Superiors/Superscript characters, open the Character Palette and scroll down to the rows numbered 230 and 240.
Some fonts also have superscripts of 4-9 and 0.

The Unicode can be seen in the yellow label that appears when you click a character in the Character Palette.

* * *

Alternatively, click a character in the Character Palette and drag it into the document.

To configure Unicode Hex Input:

1. Go to the Dock and click the System Preferences icon. The System Preferences panel appears.
2. Click the ‘Input Menu’ tab.
3. In the list that appears, scroll down to “Unicode Hex Input’.
4. Click the checkbox. A tick appears in the box.

Unicode Hex Input will now appear after the default keyboard in the keyboard menu. To activate the Unicode keyboard, select it. Typing Unicodes with the Alt key held down should now work.

Ragtime is an integrated word processing,
spreadsheet. drawing, etc. application from
Germany. It was first imported to the US in he
mid 90’s but not a lot of effort was made to
promote it and it was crushed by MS Office. I
see that it still has a US distributer.

In fact, I would say, a few years after the Mac was born, i.e. late 80s.

I’m also a big fan of Tables and Merlin2

I’d forgotten, but about ten years ago, I was given a Ragtime CD at a Mac Expo! I still have it (it’s version 4.0.1) and it should work on the G5 iMac. I’ll have a look at it tomorrow.

Thelonius Monk…the top jazzmen are great musicians, but my favourite music is the blues/rock of the late 60s-early 70s. There are some great clips on YouTube of Zeppelin, Wishbone Ash and Free playing live. Wonderful stuff.

Glad you got Unicode working. Few users know about it and because it’s such a painful, complex way of accessing special characters, fewer care. The OS and font programmers seem to love it, however!

The font palette of RagTime 6 is very convenient to work with Unicode
(still more than those of MacOS X), and I use it often, but I did not
know the way of typing characters by hex input
