indexa file

I am rebuilding a site I maintain and seem to have got into a muddle as regards file/folder structure. I noticed in the site folder (now replaced) that there is a 16kb file named index.html which is the completed home page of the site. there is also a 4kb file called index.html. I followed Delta Dave’s instructions in another thread and used File>Document Setup to republish and thus create a new site folder. The index and indexa files are still there. The obvious action is to trash index and rename indexa but I suspect that is wrong.

Can someone (Delta Dave ?) explain how this extra file was created and what I can do about it.

Thanks

It would appear that you have 2 ‘home’ pages with the name index but FW will rewrite the file name to avoid conflicts - hence index.html and indexa.html

So which is the correct one and do you want to keep the other one.

The one that isn’t the ‘home’ page you should change the file name in the inspector to something more appropriate ie myotherpage.html and then ensure the file name of the one that is the home page is changed to index.html

Once you have resolved the naming conflict you will be GTG

Thanks Dave. I hoped I could rely on you. I take it that I should not simply delete the redundant one.

I take it that I should not simply delete the redundant one.

Does it have content that you want to keep as a separate page - or is it a modified duplicate of the original home page.

If the content should be displayed as a unique page then keep it (renamed) but if it is just a copy then bin it.

My methodology is really just so that you dont trash it without due consideration.

Thanks again. I found it in FW as an untitled file but named indue.html in the Inspector. I trashed it and renamed the other one. All’s well until the next problem!

I found it in FW as an untitled file but named indue.html in the Inspector.

When you create a new page in a folder in FW it will automatically be named index.html if there isn’t one named that already.

This applies in a new document too.
