Inherited site

Hi chaps, I may have some work from a local company, they’ve asked if I could also look after their website. This would involve simple things like changing the scrolling images on the home page. Whilst I know NO html or CSS I am willing to learn (I guess I would prefer to rebuild it with ‘Freeway’ then I could happily play around with everything and add a bit of interest but I think they would resist that as the owner’s husband built it but doesn’t have time to change things but they might dump me and want the site back).

That has made me think … can I preserve the existing site somehow and rebuild it in the knowledge that they could always revert to the original ?

I have all the access p/words etc.

Or should I leave things alone and try some html ?

Sorry about the big question but I’m sure some of you chaps, with loads more knowledge than I have, could maybe give me some sound advice.

Best Rog

I would look at it in terms of percentages. If all they ask you to do at this juncture is make a few text changes, then by all means familiarize yourself with a good text editor like TextWrangler (free) and dive in. Search and replace will go a long way toward making text corrections in HTML – it’s just a tagging language, after all, and most of what you see on screen is just plain text.

If the changes are more extreme, or global (updating the navigation on every page) then I would seriously consider building it over in Freeway. You’ll have the benefit of a visual editing environment, really rich copy and paste, Actions, and so forth. The investment in rebuilding everything will pay off in spades when you have to make more changes later.

You can make a duplicate of the current site using an FTP application, and save that somewhere as a “just in case” backup.

Excellent thanks Walter, yes I think I’ll rebuild, it shouldn’t take too long, it’s fairly simple (unless I’m missing something) … and yes I’ll make sure I make a dupe and a backup somewhere.
