Hi Daniele:

I’m working to hit a project deadline, so I’ve only had a few minutes to play with the beta so far. I’ll have more time in a few days.

However, I’ve confirmed that the bugs I reported for Mountain Lion 10.8.5 (see http://freewaytalk.net/thread/view/149611) have been fixed.

There are some bugs in the gradient editor, and I’ve reported those.

The release notes say that there will be new Help documentation, although it’s not yet available for the beta.

There are some new drop-down menus at the bottom of the drawing window, but so far I don’t see any significant feature changes. I’ll let you know what I find after I’ve had a chance to play with it some more.

Oh…the minimum system requirement for version 3.5 is OS X 10.8. That probably will make a lot of Snow Leopard users unhappy, and I can sympathize with that sentiment. However, I saw the handwriting on the wall last year, when it appeared that Apple was dropping support for Snow Leopard, so I decided I’d better make the move to Mountain Lion. (Mavericks was not an option; too much stuff I used was still broken by it at the time…and some of it still is.)

Anyhow, if you’re running 10.8.x or later, why not download the beta and try it for yourself?

Just a minor quirk: in beta 10, the minute explanations that appear when one walks the mouse over the tools at the top of the window are not complete, for instance one correctly gets “free rotate” for, well, the rotate tool, but it’s “free rotate” also for the next four tools and even the “info” button
Also, they are in english while the reste of the interface is localized.

This forum is not the best place to report bugs. I recommend that you report bugs directly to the developer using the links on the Support page:

Hi & good day,
With the beta (3.5b 10 on OS 10.9.3) the gradient tool seems to work alright, but then with the image file at zoomed size and trying to move one of two text objects, there is this error alert:

Can’t complete this command.

Error: There isn’t enough memory.
File: ImageData.mm
Line: 271

Now which memory is this, the app’s ~ or the iMac’s ?
or my own?

with best regards,

                 -|-|-|-|- RANT ALERT!! -|-|-|-|-

Hi Frank:

If it’s any help, so far I haven’t found anything that I would consider to be any game-changing new features in the 3.5 betas. For me, the big advantage of Intaglio 3.5 will be that all of the bugs that showed up when I moved from Snow Leopard (SL) to Mountain Lion (ML) get fixed …and so far, that appears to be the case.

Truth be told, I wish I were still running Snow Leopard. For me, it was one of those milestone versions of OS X, like the last version of Tiger. Once SL got to its final version, it was rock-solid, and everything worked perfectly. Not so with ML; lots of familiar Mac functionality has been destroyed. (Actually, I think it started in Lion…but I skipped that altogether.)

Truth be told, the only reason I “upgraded” to ML was because I had no choice. Many of the apps I use have abandoned SL support, including some I need for a document management system I administer. I’m subject to numerous security standards, including the requirement to apply all security patches.

When essential apps stopped supporting SL, my next best choice was Mountain Lion (…Mavericks badly broke many apps and plug-ins I use daily, so that was out.)

In fact, OS X is a very different system in ML. It’s less intuitive, and suffers from a disease I call “minimalist chic”, wherein the attempt to simplify is done at the expense of things that already worked fine.

For example, the obliteration of scrolling arrows. What mucking foron in Cupertino came up with that one? Try using the scroll bar to fine-tune your position in a 600-page document, or in documents at high magnification. I’ve had to waste my time scouring the web for workarounds (…er, where they even exist), and waste more time screwing around with the scroll bar in apps where no workarounds exist.

And that only scratches the surface. Apple has obliterated the Save As… command, replacing it with a non-intuitive “Duplicate” function that requires more keystrokes or mouse actions than were necessary to accomplish the same task in SL. Worst of all, until you figure out how it works, you can easily end up unwittingly doing destructive editing in your documents.

There are other insults: resizing the file preview pane in column view is completely non-intuitive; the search functions in Finder continue to deteriorate, as Spotlight becomes an ever more intrusive resource hog; customized icons are no longer allowed in the Finder sidebar, robbing even more user ability to control the look and feel of the Mac environment. And what idiot came up with the idea of hiding the user Library folder (that insanity started in Lion)…as though no serious user would ever need to get in there. Incredible.

…er, not that I am bitter. (heh)

Anyhow, for what it’s worth, Intaglio 3.41 in SL worked just fine for me. Sure…I have my own wish list of feature improvements, but so far none of them have appeared in the 3.5 betas anyway. And so far, some very useful stuff is missing in 3.5 (like certain font formatting features, for example).

So, if Intaglio 3.41 is working for you in SL, count yourself lucky. At least you still get to work with what is arguably one of the best versions of OS X ever. For me it has gone downhill since Snow Leopard.
