Just like Photoshop for iPhone? Look at http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=eXpbGaIkPlw
Very nice: The new warning dialog (a call from the Adobe support center direct on your iPhone).

Yes I know… lol!

BUT

A radical rethink, and it could work…

Yes it would have to be radical! LOL!

Extremely radical! I’m not even sure if Apple has standardized Undo yet, so that’d have to be done manually. Plus, accidentally pressing the “Home” key would quit the app (since it can’t run in the background).

FWIW, I’ve taken this seriously enough to create a rough prototype to run on the iPhone simulator using an early version of the SDK. There were some annoying limitations to the SDK (e.g., in drawing text graphically) and I submitted bugs to Apple but these things can take a while to work their way into the release software (depending on Apple priorities). It was clear an app like Intaglio wasn’t really what they were considering when they decided what to put in the SDK and what to leave out. I haven’t tried to keep my experiment up to date with the final version of the SDK.

There are some obvious UI problems that would need to be considered for this new paradigm. For example, you can’t add any kind of keyboard modifier when dragging so things like option-drag to duplicate are impossible. Perhaps some of this can be solved by multi-touch. Another example is that it’s impossible to tell the difference between picking up your finger and accidentally dragging it off the edge of the screen. This could be pretty annoying if the edit area extends all the way to the edge of the screen.

Perhaps after version 3.0 is finished I’ll put out some kind of technology preview for people to play with and point out the good and bad points.

Nick,

I was thinking along those same lines  Wondering both about the obvious difficulties and what would be considered a useful app for a vector drawing app on the iPhone.

The idea sounds like one of those things that yield a previously unknown type of app once you work through it.
