Freeway comes with the Freeway Shop Action suite, which integrates with Mal’s E-commerce for payment. You can create a catalog directly in Freeway, and add cart buttons and so forth using the Freeway Shop. If you want even more control, Tim Plumb has a more complex Action suite available at his site http://freewayactions.com The Freeway Shop is a simplified version of that system, IIRC.

Thanks Walter. When I refer to catalog, I Mean a virtual catalog where you can order items from each page.

Like this:

Well, that’s what I meant by you could create that with Freeway. Do you want to be able to add and manage products in a database, and have the individual product pages generated automatically? Because that’s also possible, but it requires you to roll up your sleeves with database code. There’s no plug-in for that yet. But if you use the “pro” version of the Mals Shop (by Tim Plumb) you can do all sorts of database-driven stuff with Freeway and Mal’s.

Thanks Walter. I have a greeting card company. I want to build a website for my wholesale customers to order cards.
I’ve chosen Freeway to do it with although I’m a complete novice. I saw this virtual catalog( the link I sent you) and thought it would be a nice way of showing my collection of cards If it is not to complicated.

The link you posted is to a very impressive Flash application. I really like the little post-it notes! You could certainly build a site in Freeway that navigated in this manner, there’s a core Action called Link To Page that generates automatic links from one page to the next, good for making this sort of “slide show” layout.

And once you have each of your greeting cards on a page, and the previous/next navigation placed, then it would be a short step to add a Mal’s cart button on each page.

None of this would be automatic, but it could be done entirely in Freeway.

If you have between 5 and 50 cards, then this would be a pretty manageable setup. Using Master Pages, you would set up as much of the layout as possible, then just make individual pages based on the appropriate master.

When you start getting into hundreds of pages, then it’s time to think about a database and some sort of content management system. There are a number of catalog/shopping cart applications out there, some of them free/open-source, others paid/supported. It really depends on your needs which way you go there.

I have 72 cards in my collection at this moment. Given my experience level building a website (none). I want to keep it as simple as possible. Before I saw this virtual catalog, I had laid out the framework for the site. I designed all the pages in Photoshop. If it would be all right, I can send you jpegs of some of the typical pages to see what you think. I would need your email address.

Thanks again for your advice.

If you have web space somewhere (your ISP may give you some for free) then it would be best to post the images there as (Save for Web) JPEGs, and put the URLs to the pictures here. Then you get the benefit of lots of other members’ input as well!

If you drag each of your Photoshop files into a new Freeway page, you can lay out the pages directly on top of them (use them as a template) and then delete the Photoshop file when you’re done. Then convert each layout page into a Master Page, and use those to “stamp out” all the pages of your catalog. You should probably end up with two or three different master pages, and then a bunch of “instances” of those masters for your site.

I’ll either do that or put them up on my flickr page. It might take a little bit. I’m in the middle of another project. That’s great advice about using my PS files as templates, although I have to resize them. Can you tell if I’m limited to web colors for the backround?

Thanks Walter,

No, the Web colors thing hasn’t been really needed for many years now. It’s still useful to stick to a palette that’s guaranteed to work, but you can go in between if you like, most people have millions of colors anymore.

Oh, and don’t bother resizing the Photoshop files, Freeway can do that for you. Just draw a graphics box on the page, drag the layered Photoshop file right into it, then resize the image to fit (Shift-Option-Command-F). If you hold the same keys down while dragging a corner, the image will resize proportionally, too.

Walter, sorry for taking so long to respond. Here are some screenshots of three pages for my new site. The card page contains thumbs of my sub-collections. Short of a virtual catalog, what I would like is to be able to click on a card within a sub-collection which would bring up an enlarged image on the right (as Shown) with a “quantity’ and " add to cart” button for each card. The quantity discount would be automatically figured in the shopping cart (Mal"s or PayPal Standard).

Your comments and sggestions would be greattly appreciated.

I don’t think you would have any trouble making this in Freeway. Try
laying out the pages, minus the commerce stuff, and use the Target
Show/Hide Layer Action to make the full-size previews appear. When
you have the layout working to your liking, you can add the cart
stuff to each preview layer, and the page will suddenly work as a
catalog.

If you work out the details on one page first, you can change this
page to a master page, and then go back and “stamp out” a new
instance page for each set of products.
