Interesting Topic

Some morning entertainment: Here’s a topic that’s apparently taking on
a life of its own, though I’m not sure why; it’s not that interesting
or controversial. I believe it started on Twitter and after seeing
numerous references/links to it recently I just had to
look…curiosity and all. I’m continually amused at how tightly wound
people get about such things (despite that I generally agree). At
least I don’t take it as seriously as some people. Sheeesh…relax,
you know?

I wonder how many of those guys work on PCs and have never had the
luxury of seeing/using Freeway Pro? Yet may have had the misfortune of
brushes with ‘junior’ PC web design software, none of which, IMHO,
comes close.

There will always be good designers who find code a difficulty, but I
agree that those who do get the hang of it have much more control.

There was another blog post recently (though I can’t find it anywhere
– can anyone remind me?) that posited a different benefit to nearly
the same premise.

The idea was that if you show Photoshop comps to your clients in the
design phase, you are buying yourself man-years of struggle and
anguish when it comes time to build the thing. Those rounded corners
and soft shadows don’t look so nice in IE when you come right down to
it, since the PNG images aren’t transparent any more.

The idea that this article put forward was that if your client only
ever sees the layout in HTML, then anything that his or her browser is
doing to mangle it is as good as they will ever see it. There’s no
disconnect between the lovely oil painting that is the Photoshop (or
equivalent) design comp and the ugly reality that is cross-browser
HTML rendering.

And when and if your client ever gets a better browser, she may call
you up and accuse you of upgrading her site! The money quote was “Hey,
you made an iPhone version of our site! Thanks!”

Coding to me really is like another language. I can’t make sense of it most of the time. I can sort of understand little snippets here and there, but I couldn’t begin to code a site.

If I had to code by hand, I’d never do web design.

I really don’t like the “code snobs” that look down upon those who don’t. They’ve probably never done traditional page layout for print.

I mean, would I rather use InDesign or code Postscript or PDF?

Just my thoughts…
