Irregular Hotspot

Hi. Im pretty much a novice and would be greatful if anyone could help me out here. I have a map that i want to be able to select a particular county on the map using some form of rollover i.e. if i move the mouse over a county, a bigger map of that county appears.

Can you tell us what version of FW you are using - Pro or Express. That will give us a better idea of solution to offer.

Here is a quick example that shows text when hovered over but it could just as easily be larger images. Try Norway, Sweden or Finland.

Hi David, Its Freeway Pro. Im still on the trial version if that makes any difference. Thank you for that example. That is what i need it to do. I can get rollover working, it is marking the irregular area for a rollover I’m am struggling with. Thanks

Just FYI, there is no functional difference between the trial and licensed versions of Freeway. They are binary identical, as far as I know, and entering a serial number “turns” one into the other.

You can ‘draw’ an irregular area to become a rollover using the Map Area tool.

Click and Hold on the Map Area icon in the Tool bar until you can select the Path option - then you can create a Path much like as in Illustrator and apply the Rollover action to that.

I have mapped the area, using the path as you said, then Item/Actions/Rollover but when i open the actions window there is only one option ‘normal’ there is no mouse over or click options

Hi Sue

If you have the knack of creating a rollover to get the irregular shape you can create this as a graphic using the graphic tool. You can combine this with the show hide layer action which allows you to have a fade rather than a quick transition.I will try and find the link to a test site that uses this.

because you are using a Rollover in this instance to trigger another event. Click on the Parameters Tab to see what you need to set.

Ideally you want to use the Rollover in conjunction with an action like Target Show/Hide Layer such as at http://www.deltadesign.co/fw_examples/fwactions/rollover2.html

Great example DeltaDave.

To get your head around this first time takes a while Sue. You need to make sure the references are correct. In Daves example the target group is Indigo and number 1 or #1. the next rollover item would have a different target image say #2 and #3 and so on.

On your map those would be your irregular shapes.

The rollover action should be applied to the part or graphic that you want to initiate the change (often a button) and the show hide layer should be applied to the irregular shape/item/image that you wish to reveal.

The group name for the rollover and the show hide needs to be the same. in Daves example they both belong to the group Indigo.

Happy to talk through if you end up banging your head against a brick wall.

I am trying two images i want to appear on mouseover and they seem to be ok (They are hidden/restore/fade/Target groups are set to 1 & 2

Two rollover’s are created by Map Area/Path and an irregular shape drawn on the main image, to where i want each graphic to appear from but i don’t have the same parameters as on DeltaDave’s example. I have Restore, Find Targets, Target Group, Mouse over and Click :frowning:

Then all you really need to set in the Rollover action is the Target Group and the MouseOver # (for the rest you can leave at the default settings) and ensure that they tie up with the settings on the Target Show/Hide item that you want to appear.

I have the target group ‘Indigo’ set on everything, The first mapped rollover area mouseover is set to 1 and area two mouseover set to 2.

The first image i need to appear has target no set to 1 and the other is set to 2. Is this all correct?

Yes - is it online somewhere?

To recap: first item Rollover settings Target group: Indigo, MouseOver#: 1

Second item Rollover settings Target group: Indigo, MouseOver#: 2

First show/hide item Target Group: Indigo Target#: 1

Second show/hide item Target Group: Indigo Target#: 2

if it is not working then you need to make sure that your trigger images are not combining with an underlying graphic but without seeing the page online then it is difficult to diagnose where it is going wrong.

You are using the Target Show/Hide Layer action with Rollover aren’t you?

I have everything set correctly but i don’t have the same list of parameters, as DeltaDave’s example, when i add rollover to the mapped area (the irregular shape) on the map. I have restore, Find Targets, Target Group, Mouseover and click.

If i put the rollover on to the main picture i can get it to work for one whole picture rollover. It has the correct list of parameters but when i apply the rollover to the mapped shape it doesn’t work.
