Its that old Freeway versus Wordpress thing again!

I am looking to see what is possible with Freeway, seeing as its my preferred website design tool.

How much is achievable of this example within Freeway? Or would it be easier for me to just do this all in Wordpress?

I know that aspects of the whole Wordpress/Freeway discussion have been covered before but I’m interested to know if this design can be recreated using Freeway at all.
It may be a larger project but I’d be interested to have any expert eyes views on this.

Hope things are good where you are.

It all depends on what you want to get out of the process I would imagine. If you are just looking to get a site done and you are generally happy with the design and functionality of that theme then it makes financial sense to buy it. There are a lot of features and styles in there (responsive layout, shopping cart, integrated blog etc) that you could recreate in Freeway but at $55 you’d have to work pretty fast to make it financially worth your while.

If, however, you want to see how far you can push Freeway and learn a thing or two in the process then why not try and base your Freeway project on some of the aspects of this site? Freeway gives you most of the tools you need to create a site like this although not all of the things you need are documented and nicely packaged ready to use. You’ll be off of the road with Freeway (excuse the pun) and in the thick of it in no time but you’ll learn a lot about how you could recreate a theme like this in the process.
Regards,
Tim.

I’m totally with you.

Well - I woke up this morning and recognized, that Freeway is generating code. The underlying code is the base for a browser to display things. So I tend to say, that Freeway can cover all constructional facts of this (pretty nice) page.

Easier in WP? This is hard to judge, cause it really depends what shall happen with the project later. And I haven’t covered the tons of functions in there yet (slider, menubar for small devices, smoothness, galleries etc) which are all based on jQuery and works in WP as simple extensions. For me personal it would be indeed a long journey to suck all that out and transfer it into Freeway.

It is always good to have a discussion on everything and unlike a couple of others here, I am not that negative towards WordPress.

It is a matter of (unfortunately) fact, that we can’t use Freeway for building WP templates at a current stat (and I’m even unsure if this is really true - I simply didn’t dig that deep into this yet).

The InlineConstruction (relative positioned items) is a “must have” in both worlds WP and FW and I could think of Caleb’s Backdraft as a really good starting point to cover the FW side.

So - yes, I see a good chance but I also see a couple of obstacles and plenty of work to keep it clean, straight and easy. I should really bookmark this and simply start - if I would find a bit of time to dig.

Cheers

Thomas

I agree it would be a great learning experience to do this in FW, assuming you have the time and inclination to do so, but as Tim mentioned you would need to get hands-on. That said, I’m sure it’s quite doable in FW.

WordPress has many pros, most of which center around the ease of implementing all sorts of fairly complex functionality with point-n-click simplicity, but one area in particular stands out as a real kludge: the design aspect. Should you need to customize the template you could possibly be in for a fair bit of work as it can be a very convoluted and fractured process. Something to keep in mind.

Thank you very much for your informed and useful feedback.

I am keen to learn how to extend Freeway and show what is achievable with it. To this extent I would be interested to see some sort of gallery of ‘best of’ creations made in Freeway just to see how far people have pushed it. I get the occasional almost disparaging response from some code heads when I mention that I use Freeway. It doesn’t bother me in the slightest but it would be great to demonstrate clearly what is achievable in Freeway.

I may go for the Wordpress solution as I reckon this bit of work may be a demanding client in terms of time etc. However I shall try to see if elements of it can be recreated in Freeway as a sort of parallel project. I can see some parts of it are doable with my relatively limited knowledge of Freeway so far but other aspects of the design as is rightly pointed out may take me some time to do.

I appreciate and value your contributions.
