A new client of mine has had a joomla site created by a friend of a friend, who can no longer help them.
The client has decided that they do not have the time to manage the content themselves and is also struggling with how to use the system.
I would like to learn a CMS system, so I have offered to look after the site for a small fee and use it as a learning tool.
Which has been discussed etc.
So any advise on Joomla and working with CMS much appreciated.
Mike
My understanding is that there is a steep learning curve with Joomla. Do you need something of the size of Joomla? Would a smaller, easier CMS suffice? WebYep is very easy to use and integrates with FW well.
If you really want to learn, you could think about rebuilding the site in Freeway using WebYep or (my personal favorite) PulseCMS. That way you learn using Freeway and integrating the CMS yourself into Freeway. The build itself is ‘for you’ but you could charge the maintenance though.
There is a Joomla action suite as well, but I don’t know how up-to-date it is to start with. PulsePro is ridiculously easy to use in all it’s professionalism, even though it lacks some features I’d like to see in it. Never the less … rebuilding the site and integrate a CMS by yourself is a good way to start 9and work with).
Joomla is far less daunting than it appears. I started out with iweb, then freeway and now I almost exclusively use joomla. It’s very straight forward. Learning joomla took less time than it took to learn the basics of Freeway, so long ago. There are tons of tutorials.
There are frequent core updates. Most install with a click of a button. The most important thing to know about your client’s site is what version of joomla it is currently running. If it is still in the 1.5 iteration, youll need to begin making plans to migrate the site to 2.5 or 3.1.5 very soon.
I’m glad to give you a walk through you’d like.
