jpeg image on top of color background question

I’d like to put a graphic image on a color background using the inspector pallet. The graphic image has areas on it that must be in alignment with the html items of the page. The graphic will lbe about 580 x 350. I’d like the graphic to be in the center of the browser window both H and V. If I align the image centered horizontal and centered vertical…how do I view this in page mode while I put in the rest of the elements? I can’t seem to understand how this is done? can someone lend some advice?

I forgot to mention…this graphic has a torn edge not something that I can simply crop in PS and save as a jpeg.
So the total effect is a torn piece of paper floating in the center of the browser window.

Well, if you need transparency, which it sounds like you do, you’ll need to make the graphic a GIF. JPEG does not support transparency.

Not sure about the first part of your question. I’m a FW newbie!

Or a PNG (which can be somewhat weighty). For a background image I prefer the art of foolery instead.

If the bg image is to repeat down but not across, why not open it in your image editor (e.g., Photoshop) and sample the color you want behind the image, create a layer of that color behind the bg image layer. Then you don’t need to export any transparency.

You can still color the bg (which I would do) as it’s good for situations where the images don’t load in a viewer’s browser. And since graphics often load after the page elements, it makes for a smoother transition, I think.

OK, yes I like the foolery idea and that’s what I’ll go with.

My bg image is not to repeat, its one image as big as the page. 580H x 350V with color behind.

But my big question is how do you see where your elements are on the page as you design when the page is set in the inspector to center V and H. When I put the html elements on the page and then view in preview the page is in the center where it’s supposed to be but the elements are way off the page.

There must be something very simple I’m missing.
