Last day of MacWorld iWorld

Life is good. MacWorld is small like last year.

Yeah… I donno. Good reason for tacking iWorld at the end of the event name, next year should just be called iPad/Phone world. The band Atomic Tom was fun, but I was really rather disappointed, not owning either a phone nor pad. I knew it wouldn’t be the same as my first MacWorld (when Moscone Center was totally covered with 'world, but I was glad between the three passes I had I only paid for one - $25.

I think that was my last show.
Dinner at Lefty O’Doul’s near Union Square was great, as usual.

PS - I did have a chance to talk to the people at MacScan about an event that happened this morning. During a delete of the old app a window popped up (Lion) asking if I wanted to include seemingly related files in the ‘trashing’. I selected Trash Marked and a few minutes later I check the trash and it was full of internet apps (freeway was one) bits and pieces of files and folders and prefs. that seemed to all be related to internet items.

Guys at MacScan ask me to send some info, and I can’t be sure (they were sure it was not) related to the deletion of the program.

Good thing I backed up with Time Machine the night before. It makes replacing items when found (google chrome is like new tonight - guess prefs are gone) a bit less painless (I couldn’t just reverse the deletion).

Just wondered if anyone has had a similar experience while deleting items / programs in Lion, or has any comments or words to the wise.

Thanks

Hi Frank

I get this ‘delete related items’ in Lion too but don’t have MacScan installed. I’ve never had the time to try and track down which app may be causing this, or if it is part of Lion. I just reject the ‘kind’ offer of trashing my files anytime it pops up. The biggest annoyance I have with Lion to date is that it seems to ignore my preferences on a regular basis and just does what it fancies on an apparently random basis.

All the best

Hi Gordon; do you by any chance have a little utility called ‘Hazel’ installed? It, too, will offer to delete related files if you trash an app.

best wishes,

I have not had any files deleted but I do not trust most of the anti-virus or anti-malware software titles out there.

Backing up with time machine is always a good idea. Speaking of Time Machine here is a hint for any of you who may have a Snow Leopard Server. If your HD goes bad and you replace it here is the correct procedure to restore everything:

Stick the Snow Leopard Server install DVD in your machine and boot it up. Choose your language. Now go under the Tools menu and at the bottom is Restore and it works perfectly. You can even choose any date or hour in your Time Machine backup to use as your starting point on your restored server. Choosing a point a few hours before the sudden death of your HD is usually a good idea as the HD was quite possibly writing bad data the last couple of hours.

By the way the Time Machine backup must be attached to the server you are restoring I did not see any way to reach a network Time Machine.

If by chance you Install Snow Leopard Server and then migrate your Time machine data you will be very disappointed as Open Directory will be blown out and many other items such as mail will probably be hosed beyond repair.

And for MacWorld iWorld I too miss the real MacWorld and will probably go to Las vegas and the Consumer Electronics Show next year and possibly stop by MacWorld on it’s closing Saturday as I did this year. Other World Computing, Western Digital, Xerox, Dragon Speech, and fifty more mac centric vendors were there along with the 400 iPad, iPhone & iPod vendors. I took the opportunity to buy some books on how to write iPad applications as I see the writing on the wall.

Hi Paul

Sorry, don’t have that installed. I’ve got TechTool Pro and Drive Genius but their scanning pieces are switched off. I also use Cocktail for weekly maintenance but that’s about it. I’m going to have to look into more of the apps to see what’s making this happen.

Only recently I did a total clean install of Lion and all my applications and I’ve tried to be very careful with what else I’ve added to the mix. All very strange.

All the best

Hi again

Just to follow up on this I think I may have found where my “uninstaller” app was coming from. I have CNET TechTracker installed which is great for keeping all my applications up-to-date and it appears that the uninstaller is part of this software - at least it looks like it from the icon. Pity there isn’t a preference in the application to turn it off.

All the best

Gordon
