Layers source order and naming

Hi - I am trying to organise my site prior to publishing, I’m sure there are lots of check lists and things to do and will read the reference and manuals and the threads and, I hope, discover them all and write myself a list (unless there is one) but one of my tasks is to get the order of the page elements into the correct order but I’m struggling to drag them up and down, it seems a bit hit-and-miss, is there a trick to this please ? and then (I’m working on the master page) should I name all of the items logically and add alt text here ?

best Roger

When dragging the items up and down to get them in a certain order, it’s possible to unwittingly turn an item into a child of another item, which can mess things up. Watch the blue line when you drag an item: if you drag an item up or down and to the right, you may see the blue line move to the right as well. This means that the item you’re dragging will become the child of another item (the icon of the parent icon will show grey at this point).

You should certainly name all the items logically and add alt text to them on the master page. Having done this, go through each page and sort out the names and alt text for any extra items on that page.

Excellent thanks Michael - I was aware (by making that mistake earlier) of the dangers of diagonal dragging (nothing to do with cross dressing I hope) but still have a problem with just dragging the order … also - is the order of this list first (frontmost ie visible) at the top ? ie I’m using the excellent carousel action and want to edit individual ‘layers’ so I need to see them so thought the easiest way was to drag them to the top) ? There’s probably a more efficient method. Thanks for your time Roger

If several layers occupy the same position, the order in which they are drawn is top first, so the bottom layer on the list will be the one that’s visible.

But if you just want to edit an individual layer, there’s no need to drag it to the bottom of the list. First select the layer in the site panel, then press “Enter”: it is now visible for editing.

Thanks again Michael but try as I might I can’t get the “select the layer and hit enter” to work. I have a stack of layers in a “carousel” and would like to work on them individually and have reverted to dragging them to the bottom, there are only a few so it’s not a big deal but your “… hit enter …” (is that the same as “return”)? doesn’t seem to do it ! You can only change the layering of child items if you did not use the “insert html” option to place them. If the child items were drawn then you can move them. Otherwise, the only way to move inserted inline items is to cut and paste them.
