Learning CSS

I’m really considering learning more about CSS and wondered if anyone
here has some advice as to where best to start and what preferred
resources there are. It basically comes down to whilst I can
externalise the stylesheets, CSS positioning is still a stumbling
block. And whilst I don’t think it’s a major issue (as many people
here have also said), I do get asked to externalise the positioning
too and don’t like giving the answer ‘I can’t’. So if anyone has any
advice I would be very grateful.

Hi Nathan
There is a quick way to move the inline position styles and place them in the head and thats using Weavers

Remove Div Style 1.1.1 Action

http://www.coastalrugs.com/Actions/Resources/Remove%20DIV%20Style%201.1.1.fwaction

its a quick step (If Needed) to then copy those styles and place them in an external style sheet and finnaly supress the inline output.

In fact with a combination of weavers action and my new action set which I have posted at action forge you could keep everything within freeway in a new bespoke style sheet, this includes those position styles. As a guide I would only move those style at the very end of the project so you are only migrating these styles once.

you can find a brief ouline on this site about what it can do

“Bulletproof Web Design” by Dan Cederholm is well written. I think he
has a couple CSS related books.

aaahhhhh I am getting so forgetful… I forgot to add the book I use all the time which is
CSS: The Missing Manual… I find this book a really good one as its easy to understand, has loads of examples and covers most topics. imcluding IE problems and what you need to do to overcome them.

Thank Max and Todd. I’ve had a look through the tutorial and noted the
books.

Although it looks a very logical approach, my finished site is going
to end up around 80-85 pages with a lot of content and using the
action to Remove DIV style on every single item rather than applying
site-wide or to each page (if that’s how it’s supposed to be used) and
then copying the CSS, to then come back and add throughout the site
might become very ‘over my head’ at the moment and is going to take me
a lot of work to get this working in the way I think I’d like it to.

I appreciate your time and will continue to try your tutorial on
smaller projects.

There dozens if not hundreds of books on the subject. Two of the most respected authorities are Dan Cederholm and Eric Meyer. They both have multiple books available that are fairly accessible, but not necessarily for beginners as they do expect readers to have a basic understanding of CSS.

Don’t forget the hundreds of valuable web sites that also cover the subject. There are so many to mention, but my favorites are http://www.alistapart.com and http://www.smashingmagazine.com, but a simple search of Google for CSS along with a reference book that lists all the CSS specs will give you months of valuable information and techniques to play with and absorb.

As to the external CSS…well lets just say I’m not a fan of the available Freeway solutions either. For those clients that insist on external CSS style sheets, my HO is they are much too concerned about code and should probably be doin it themselves. My response is generally “I give you great design. With that in hand you can tweak anyway you want”. Still, a lot of jobs get passed along because of this eccentricity in Freeway.
