Learning rollovers

Hi. I’ve just bought Freeway 5 Pro and I’m working through the tutorials. First hiccup has been the rollovers.

I followed the instructions (I think!) but the action only applied to the top (graphic text) item - the underlying initial item and the one to be used didn’t appear in the Actions Window.

I then did something not mentioned in the tutorial: I grouped the three items. The Actions Window now shows the original three items, plus a new one (presumably the other three as a group). If I uncheck this new item, I can get the rollovers to work as per tutorial. But this isn’t right, is it?

If it is a rollover for a menu graphic you could try this:

1# Import a graphic into a graphic item (The non roll over state).

2# Select ‘Fit box to content’ from the ‘Item’ menu if FW5, ‘Fit Box
to Graphic’ from the ‘Item > Graphic’ menu in FW 4. (I know you are FW5)

3# While selected add a ‘Rollover’ action.

4# From the rollover action window select ‘Parameters’

5# Now select ‘Select…’ from the ‘Mouse Over’ menu in the actions
window and browse to the rollover state image. Do not alter the other
menu options from their default.

You should now have a rollover, to make it linkable then select the
image again and add a hyper link to the page clicking on the image
should take you to.

Thank you Mike. However, I think my problem is that the FW tutorial (3rd tutorial in Using Freeway.pdf) is not working and I would like to understand why, even though I can provide workarounds.
This is a summary of what I did:

  1. Created a graphic element (Item 4) for the Normal state and made it grey.
  2. Made two duplicates (offset 50 50px)
  3. Made the first duplicate, the Mouseover state, green and changed its appearance in other ways.
  4. Added text to the second duplicate, with no colour background.
  5. Aligned the three boxes
  6. Locked the resulting item.
  7. Tried to apply the rollover action - and this is when I had the problems with only one of the three elements showing, and resolved this problem by grouping three elements, and ignoring the resultant new item.

I wanted to complete this tutorial before moving onto my next task, thinking how to create a photo gallery.

Mike pointed out another way to skin this particular rollover cat -
but the short answer is: Yes, what you did IS right, if the items are
layered.

When graphics are layered they aren’t able to ‘connect’ with other
graphics that may sit above or below them in the page layout.

If you are using Freeway Express, which doesn’t do layers, or if the
CSS button was dimmed/grey when you made the graphic items, or if you
UNcheck the Layer checkbox for each item in the Inspector palette,
then the process of setting up the rollover will work as expected.

Or, as you found out on your own, if you group them together they
will be held within their own ‘parent’ graphic container and be able
to see each other in the Rollover action interface.

The tutorial really needs to have something added to point this out -
it seems to trip people up on a regular basis.
