RIch,
I emailed Eugene directly and asked. I will post when I get a response.

Walter,

True, true.

I think I am leaning towards trying to make Ecwid look the way they want it to look, or there is another product that I have had a good experience with. It is called DL Guard.

It is designed mostly for downloadable products, but I think I could get it to work in this case as well.

Couple of options…I will have to put all the information together and rely on all of your input and go in one direction.

Thanks,

Rich

If you can, try this first: put everything into a single page, very
tall. I believe you can do that in exwid pretty simply. Then post it
somewhere – the real page generated by the system, not the mock-up –
and I’ll see if there’s some hooks in there that you could use to
create the alphabetical index.

I’m thinking of something like this page: http://files.libertyfund.org/pll/people/index.html
where you can type a few letters and hide everything besides what
you’re looking for. That page uses static anchor links to the
individual letters, but those links could be added in JavaScript as
the page loads. No need to re-engineer exwid for this sort of page.

There are also JavaScript tab libraries which could create a nice
tabbed interface out of a huge-tall page. It’s all one page, all one
form, but the tabs make it appear to be separate pages. The net result
is much much simpler all around.

Walter,

Thank you for your assistance.

I don’t have their complete product list yet, but I do have a markup on their actual site. We have not officially launched the site yet, so I am actually uploading to their domain:

www.woodlandgardens10.com

the store tab. I have a few items there in a markup using Ecwid.

It is only some of their sample items and I entered a couple test things.

You can take a peak and I appreciate your input, as always.

This looks really nice, and it appears as though Ecwid have already
built in some categorization and navigation to the page, so anything I
would have to add would just be gilding the hasta!

A small comment

I agree.

This is what they wanted. In fact, I tried to talk them into a different domain name, but this is what they insisted on.

Thanks for the comment.

As a side note this is one of my pet hates. I’ve lost count of how many good looking commercial vehicles I’ve seen with costly custom vinyls on them that spoil it all with a hotmail or yahoo email address.
It’s a real shame as a dedicated domain can be very affordable and a lot more effective as a marketing tool. OK rant over.

Tim.

This is what Eugene from ecwid told me: hope it helps

Hi,

Yes, I think it is possible. It will be necessary to:

  • hide the category icons via custom CSS
  • create a custom menu with letters and links to Ecwid pages

Here is where we are. The client does not like the Ecwid interface. She wants something very basic, so I am back to Web Yep and Roman Cart.

I see the example that Max has quoted above, but because I have limited knowledge of code, (and where to put that code in Freeway) I am asking for a little guidance here.

The store should be very simple,

photo–size–description–price–add to cart.

These are the elements to that would be (I am guessing, in a webyep loop item, then the client could just duplicate and be ready to roll.

I am studying the example from the obdev forum, and trying to make sense of it. Limited foundational knowledge leads to poor sense of direction.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks,

Rich

If you can’t then what chance does the client have when it comes to the ecommerce links?

KISS

Your client may not like the Ecwid interface - but if it is easy to use.

And I am afraid that your client has already demonstrated that they have no perception of a good looking interface if they want to emulate the land of giants Hosta site.

Ouch. However true, your comments wound.

I will still be reviewing the information to see if I can muddle my way through.

Hi all,

I actually know that ECWID is out of the game - so this is just for the protocool :-)))).

One thing with Ecwid is, that you can design your products up to your expectations and just add somewhere the “Add to bag button”. That’s why I love the system - but unfortunately I have nothing to sell.

It is possible to do what the customer wants. The key to do is just to grab the following code part and throw it in the richtext-editors HTML part (similar to Roman as I remember):

I wrapped a small example with free image and descriptions and in the last container the add-btn-script:

http://www.kimmich-dm.de/ecom/ecwid-tables.php

I am more than sure that all can be designed more ugly (ComicSans, plum as bg-color and of course big frames and dividers…) to exactly match the late 80s webstyle, but in fact it could be done.

As I said:

Just for protocol.

Cheers

Thomas,

I spent a couple hours last night working with Roman and came up with the same idea.

When I was entering items on Roman, the option was very simple there to just grab the html code for the particular item link. And instead of trying to use a short or long text item for the “add to cart” I used a rich text element, plugged it into the html code area of the editor and it worked beautifully !!

I will review your example. Thanks for the help.

Thomas,

Really nice look on that example. And how did you get the little zoom “this item was added” button. I have never seen anything like this before.

Is this all done through Ecwid ??

I will try this out.

Thanks,

Rich

Been following some of this discussion for future client requests, and I’m impressed with WebYep

Hi Rich,

I guess (no - I’m sure) that this only appears if you don’t install the entire shop-front-end at all (like in this example). Furthermore the check-out process will work in overlay-mode, too.

I just have had the idea, that if you have for example only a few products to sell, it might be overdosed to install a whole system.

So this would be the way ECWID works.

I agree to figure out the “code snippet” for only to have the “add-to-bag” button could be slightly easier but on the other way this is the biggest freedom of designing the view of your shop, just taking the advantages of ECWID’s backend and payment processor.

Cheers

Thomas

Thank you, Thomas.

This hosta farm is going to add 400 or so products to their list. This is why I am searching for something for ease of maintenance for her.

There will be approximately 20 pages of categories…which I will do as separate pages in Freeway. And, each of those pages will be navigated by the alphabetical list above. Then, I will design a WebYep loop that will have image, name, description, stock number, price…and the rich text element to post the html code in for the ad to cart.

I want it simple for them, and I DEFINITELY do not want to maintain this site. I am going for simplicity for her…add a product to the store list, copy to code, paste into web yep rich text. Bam…done… Push the plus button on the loop and do it all over again.

I want to explore what you have done in your above example, but for this client I am leaning toward Roman Cart. It is very easy to add the products, customize the settings, and simply be finished.

Very nice look to your example.

Thanks,

Rich

I’m a bit late to the discussion here but I have used the PHP Jabbers cart here - Registrant WHOIS contact information verification | Namecheap.com

They made some custom tweaks for me regarding the shipping but this is a simple install on your web server with an admin interface to add and update products. On your FW page you insert a line of code with the Crowbar action where you want your cart to be on your page. The CSS file is editable so you can tweak it to match your site. PHP Shopping Cart Script | PHPJabbers

If you want a fully fledged shopping cart take a look at Open Cart -http://www.opencart.com/
