As part of SEO efforts I want to put a link to a site that provides a banner or gif, their instructions say “To add a link from your website, simply choose the banner that you would like to post on your website, then copy and paste the designated code into your HTML page where you want it to appear.”
If I just copy and paste their graphic and then manually link to their site is that doing the same thing, or do sites like this include in the code something that makes it more “visible” to search engines and thus more ranking friendly.

Usually these are links you’d paste into an HTML markup item. Then the site will load the graphic itself from their server space.

However you could replicate the look by “replicating” the code snippet they have on their site. Looks to be a graphic with some text links in the green-bordered wrapping.

I can’t see how this is going to particularly improve your site ranking.

All this will do is improve theirs.

Inbound links to your site from other sites will improve ranking - not the other way round.
