linklok and downloads help!

Hi everyone, I’m very new to all this but thanks to reading the forums and the reference book I’ve sorted out most of my problems to date…however…if anyone can help me now I would be really grateful as I am officially stuck!

I’ve built a site and I am wanting to test my cart using linklok and mals. I am not using a scode (too complicated for me at the moment methinks). So a few questions:

  1. Is it ok to use punctuation in a product code for linklok? e.g. $Products[]=“id3,Anyone Can Whistle.mp3,C0=8.99,blazendoger/Anyone Can Whistle.mp3,0,2880”;

  2. Do I really have to upload my site to test the cart or can I do it in preview? (told you I was new).

  3. If I do have to upload my site to test it all, can I take it down again if it is a disaster, and if so, how!

Hope someone can help.
Hopefully,
Mol

Hi Mol

  1. Best use something else maybe underscore _
Commas are being used as field separators in the script.

  2. Not to test that the cart receives correct data from your trial purchases
but Yes if you want to complete trial purchase in order to test the LinkLok
script - unless you get your Mac running as a server.

  3. You don’t have to upload to where anyone else will see it. You can upload
to a test folder. (But be aware if the download path will be different if
    they are moved after testing).

Once you have the products listed in the script you can easily test by
various means - one of which is to manually access the download links via
the linklok manual sending facility.

Removing a site - is that what you mean? Or just the linklok aspect?
Of course anything can be removed but all you need to do is find what
doesn’t work and fix it. I didn’t use scode and have got it all working for
a few videos and pdf ebooks.
hope this helps

regards
Brian

(I can whistle - used to play in a band - all by ear though).

Hi Brian, it does help, so thank you.

I’ve put the site on preview with my hosting account and I’m going to have another crack at it this afternoon.

I did manage to get the test to send the download link to my email but it said there was nothing to download. I’ll re-read your advice and the manual having pondered all.

(Used to play in a band too - still play, but can’t whistle!)
Thanks
Mol

Hi Mol
You didn’t mention use use any FTP software but on this occasion I would be tempted to publish locally and then using theFTP application move everything including the LinkLok files to the web server.
If it does all go wrong then you can easily move things about on the server.
If you don’t have a FTP application then I can recommend Cyberduck its good and it even comes free.

Hi Max,

Thanks for your message. Hmmm, more to ponder. I have got cyberduck (read about it on this forum) and used it to upload my mp3s (as they are on a different computer) and the LinkLok files to my web server. I then used freeway to upload the site folder. I take it I can mix ways of uploading files and I hope this way won’t screw everything up?!

Yes I assumed that though some get Freeway to upload stuff for them.
I happen happen to use Interarchy and sometimes Fetch - but I FTP the
linklok files and probably then had to apply permissions (cant recall off
hand).
I also manually uploaded my product files into a securely named folder -
that would never be guessed or discovered using word or number.

TextWrangler works well for me for editing the Linklok file and I keep
recent previous versions on HD so that if something cocks up I can revert.

If one patiently applies the principles it all starts falling into place.

all the best
Brian

Yes - it’s fine - as long as you keep naming distinct!
Like don’t make a folder in Freeway with the same name as something you make
via FTP.
In this respect its just like Finder - where if you move a file with the
same name into a folder - it will replace the previous version.

Freeway will warn that files not belonging to the site document are about to
be overwritten - but that can arise from other causes - such as when using
different versions of a Freeway document publishing into the same folder.

So just make sure the names are unique in the respective directories.

Obviously there are times when scripts and support files are put into root
level such as Linklokme, but generally I would always make a distinct folder
for manually uploaded items that Freeway doesn’t interact with as a natural
precaution.

all the best
Brian

Hi Brian and Max and anyone who might be interested in mp3 downloads, linklok and mals…just to say many thanks for the input and advice, it has really helped my understanding along and I appreciated the replies.

I’ve finally got things to work but I have to give the credit to Adrian Jones of Vibralogix. He has been very patient with my limited knowledge and since contacting him only this morning the problem is finally sorted.

When software is backed by helpful support - it is of a different order.
This is mine and other’s experience of Adrian too.

Glad to hear it’s all working for you.

Brian
