Finally, a reviewer who doesn’t have a coding bias.

I second the “Well deserved, Softpress”.

The people cry for video tutorials, have they missed my site? Perhaps a better marketing ploy or simply better topics to be covered. Who knows.

Got 'em available in a form that doesn’t need downloading first?
They’re good Dan, and they deserve much better exposure! The whole
passworded access to files stored on a rather annoying file host (of
course I haven’t won a *%$! Audi A3!) is a real barrier to people
getting the benefit of your work.

Perhaps you could dedicate a few pages to being a regular Freeway
video tutorial area, not so much as a blog, more as a teaching
corner? Blog about the video tutorials, sure - but also make 'em
available in a more regular web-like way…

I agree, we’ve discussed that whole “viewing online” thing before. Perhaps a better way will present itself soon enough.

Perhaps a better way will present itself soon enough.

Take a look at http://railscasts.com for an exemplar of how this could be done. The movies are stashed in Amazon’s S3, so there’s unlimited storage, bandwidth and edge caching to make it completely simple for anyone to download these fairly massive files quickly.

I have all of the pieces of the puzzle here, just need to clear my decks so there’s time to put them together. And I would need someone to pay for the S3 bill, which is cheap, but non-free.

For S3, I have a PHP class which can put files into it and set their security properties (none, in this case). For the basic blog aspect of it, I have the libraries that build this site. I am imagining that the site would be admin’d by those who signed up to post movies. So anyone who wanted to become a contributor would need to be vetted by one of the existing members.

Thoughts?

Walter

However, this still means downloading rather than just dropping by
and checking things out. S3 may be cool, but this still seems like a
1990s approach to presenting video content.

Take a look at this service for an example of decent quality, FAR
better than YouTube:

http://blip.tv/file/1134303

Blip.tv’s benefits:

Free hosting and bandwidth
On-demand viewing
Simple URLs for viewing in the blip.tv site
Supports high-quality QuickTime formats (and most others too)
Provides an episode archive and web 2.0-style show page
Includes easy syndication so you can show your videos in your site or blog

Looks like a better way to me…

Hi. I’m Deb and I’m a Dan Fan.

I’m also the author of this review. I was starting to learn Freeway 5
when, by coincidence, I was asked to do the review. I’ve been here a
while and was reading people’s posts to learn. Once I was looking as a
reviewer I thought it best to remain quiet so I could be sure to be
fair. I’m so happy the review has been well received.

I’m a Dan Fan. (I learned well from http://danjasker.blogspot.com/
and wrote him off list to thank him for his videos. I wanted to talk
about Freeway Moments and Dan’s tutorials in the review but space is
limited, even on the web. I wish I could have mentioned them. I just
learned the article was alive about 4 hours ago, and just now posted
among the replies to mention support and tutorials.

Dan, I say to the world as I said off-list to you, your topics are
great. I believe you teach very well. I’ve been encouraging Joe to
point to your tutorials more and I believe they’ll be doing so.

(Hi Paul Bradforth, whom I knew on the GoLive Talk list in days gone

Heh, hi Deb! I was reading your mail with the increasing certainty
that I knew you, and finally came across the bit above, at the
bottom  My, that was a long time ago! Good to see you here.

Hey Deb. I remember you from the LA Mac User Group.

Chime in whenever ye feel like it.

P.S. - I bought your GoLive book. Boy that was a long time ago now… Oh! Oh! Does this mean you will be writing a new book… on another web layout program?
