Mail Vanished

Rebooting after a crash has left all my local mailboxes empty. The
Inbox folders which are tied to the remote mail server are fine, it’s
just the messages that get filtered to other mailboxes that are
missing. The folder structure is in tact but no messages. I use Time
Machine with an internal drive and an external FW drive for backups. I
tried replacing

~/Library/Mail
~/Library/Mail Downloads
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist

using TM from a couple hours ago when everything was fine but the
folders are still empty. Also, after restoring the above folders/files
and launching Mail, the dock icon bounces but no window opens. I have
to force quit then relaunch after which Mail opens OK but the
mailboxes are still empty. I find it hard to believe that with 2
separate backups I still can’t restore the messages. Suggestions?

Have you tried selecting the mail box and then selecting ‘Rebuild’ from the bottom of the ‘Mailbox’ window? only ever had happen to me once what you mention and that did the trick for me.
